If Beale Street Could Talk ★★★

the way the story is told between the past, present, and unnecessary voice over scenes just doesn't work for me. there's obviously an important story to be told but there are scenes and characters included for the sole purpose of making sure the message gets hammered in. I hope Kiki Layne has a fantastic career after this but I feel like she was miscast here. She doesn't bring much depth to Tish where I feel a much more experienced (or better 😔) actress could. And it doesn't help that every supporting character is much more interesting then both leads. It's a beautifully shot film and when the screenplay let's the characters just breathe and exist, that's when the movie really shines.
