Wow that theme… really lends a gravitas to the whole movie when it plays in the titles, which were really slick.

It has everything good about a Coen Bros movie - witty dialogue, jokes that take half a beat too long to land, plays on classic film tropes, memorable performances, and enough surreality to make you wonder why you’re seeing what you’re seeing.

Storytelling wise, it’s not on the level of their best work. You can see the gears turning,…

I thought Foxx was terrible here. His character seems traumatized, then he’s smiling and listening intently to a jazz master while next to his psycho kidnapper, then he’s a scaredy cat, then he’s staring down a crime lord acting like a badass? Maybe it’s more an issue with the writing, but his character consistently took me out of the movie, as did the weird tonal shifts.

Competent espionage thriller absolutely tanked by embarrassingly bad acting. Terrible human drama. Taking this review to note one of my least favorite movie tropes: people going separate ways after a meeting and someone stopping the other to ask a question.

    You’re dismissed.

    What?
    Being an agent.

STFU!!! Happens like three times in this movie. No one does this.
