student & wannabe film editor
Rewatched in a theater, which was weird. This woman kept coughing a few rows behind me. She spent the whole 2nd act coughing and clearing her throat. Everyone around me kept looking at each other, using their eyes to communicate: “this is weird, right?” and “she doesn’t sound ok,” and “she’s making me want to cough.”
This movie is ok. The loud cougher didn’t help. At least there were subtitles.
Through the use of layered psychedelic visuals and intense sound effects, Schrader successfully salvaged his unfinished work Dying of the Light. Sharing stylistic elements akin to Godard, Hertzfeldt, and Kubrick, Schrader tastefully heightened his uninteresting screenplay. Schrader’s manipulations of Dark gave its original screenplay a fair amount of purpose and value by putting the viewer inside of the protagonist’s deteriorating mind.
Dark is a prime example of how powerful film editing can be.
