How do you live?
No one does it like Miyazaki. Felt a genuine childlike wonder watching this unfold. While Miyazaki is undeniably playing the hits here, he isn’t resting on his laurels. Evoking scenes, characters and themes from many of his films, from Totoro to Spirited Away to Castle in the Sky, it certainly feels like a Miyazaki film (special shoutout to the Totoro-esque forest tunnel). There’s so much movement. For a film comprised solely of stills, that is quite remarkable.
It’s a vibrant, colourful love letter.
Started my MIFF with a bang.
Beautiful and slow, this builds to a very emotional epilogue which completely floored me.
There are a few scenes which are note-perfect. One involves a fish tank. I don’t want to talk about what happens (because spoilers), but it is edited in a manner which makes you feel everything from hope to joy to heartbreak. Really impeccable stuff. Uniformly excellent performances, especially Guida.
Time jumps work wonders in this film too; large space is left…
