What’s French for “style out the wazoo”?
It feels more like opera than a musical, the way it turns the simplistic into the transcendent by heaping on the beauty and high artifice (along with a splash of freewheeling New Wave immediacy). Jazzy tunes; endearing performances; gliding, graceful, enchanting, exquisite camerawork; and gobs and gobs of gorgeous color. Whatever felt strained and tiresome in La La Land feels effortless and inspired in Cherbourg.
