    Bo Burnham: Inside

Most comedians thrive on spontaneity, but Bo Burnham’s specials work because of how precise and planned they are. From the specificity of the lighting and sound cues, to the clever double meanings and wordplay in his song lyrics, to the layers of persona upon persona he builds throughout the show to keep the audience guessing how much of the real him we’re seeing- every last gesture has been sculpted for maximum impact, whether it be emotional or comedic.

    In all…

    Uncut Gems

Uncut Gems made me want to go back to synagogue for the first time in over a decade.

Well, not actually, but I thought about it for a few seconds.

Occasionally suffers from having such a large ensemble to attend to, but if your biggest problem is that you came up with too many fun characters and you didn’t want to cut any, then that’s a pretty good problem to have.
Very cool that they just went and made this. Like it’s definitely a little unpolished but I always want to support people going out there and doing it themselves. I also think the in-universe podcast that goes along with the show adds a lot to the universe. Really neat idea to help expand the edges of the world.

    Riders of Justice

Given that this was my first time back in a theater in 15 months, I probably would’ve enjoyed myself no matter what, but I genuinely enjoyed this film quite a bit. It puts some interesting spins on the “you killed my family, prepare to die” genre that generally serves as a vehicle for aging stars to portray one-man killing machines. For one, it takes a lot of care in…

    Romeo & Juliet

Hamilton was not a movie. It was a stage production that cameras happened to be there for, and the fact that it got nominated for Golden Globes is still insane to me.
THIS is how you take a stage production and modify it to make a movie instead of merely just recording it. The scenic design in particular does a great job of blending the two mediums. Josh O’Connor great. Jessie Buckley fantastic.

    30 Rock: A One-Time Special

Lol this really bummed me out because it’s the kind of dumb corporate synergy bullshit the show would’ve made fun of ten years ago. It’s also disappointing because there are so many tweets from random people joking about what these characters would be up to during quarantine that are funnier than the topics gags this special comes up with. But still, good to see the gang again, etc.
