Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy ★★★★½

The story is conventional, the humor is hit and miss... but here's the thing: Guardians of the Galaxy has such a damn big beautiful heart that I can't really help loving it right now.

And that heart originates from director James Gunn firmly understanding that if you're gonna make a movie about a group of superheroes, including a trigger-happy raccoon with anger issues and a violent walking tree; and set in a strikingly odd space fantasy world, you're gonna have to keep them firmly grounded in reality. Make them goofy, make them doubt themselves, make them fail.
And grounded they are, more so than any of the Marvel superheroes since Raimi's Spider Man.

So, well done Mr. Gunn; you've inflated a film produced by a studio often accused of "killing auteurism" with more goofiness and heart than one could ever reasonably expect from a summer blockbuster.

And it's friggin' beautiful.
