Bumpkin Soup

Bumpkin Soup ★★★½

Kiyoshi Kurosawa second feature and first studio assignment, an almost pinku, almost musical Godardian anthropological study on dissafected Japanese youth around 1985. The mix of sorrow and playfulness is very rewarding if one decides to accept the film's very odd rhythms. Its many detours never cohere, but the feelings remain strong and Yoriko Doguchi is great.
