Silver River

Silver River ★★★

A deeply confused one, in part because it is a very 30s Farberish rise and fall of tycoon tale with a 40s sensibility (Thomas Mitchell is even around as the movie’s conscience). Flynn’s self-absorption can suggest an ass, but not quite ruthless the movie strikes for (which feels closer to a Kirk Douglas type). Raoul Walsh directs half all-in, half bored, lots of this just seems to be there but when he connects (like the big brawling ending that he moves far beyond the copout it would be in lesser hands) particular in how much he cares for the man’s desire to suicide plunge into the big money world the movie that’s achieves something expressive and very much its own.
