In this 30-minute interview, Oprah Winfrey sits down with director Ava DuVernay to discuss her Oscar-nominated film, historical cycles of oppression and the broken prison system.
ava duvernay is truly one of the most intelligent, insightful and important voices in directing right now and we should all be paying attention
Ava touches on some subjects here that aren’t entirely covered in 13th (2016). She discusses the journey of making 13th as well as her thought process while making it. Ava discussed that there are hundreds of hours of footage that didn’t make the final cut, and that there was a possibility of 13th being a miniseries...which is something I think I would’ve preferred. It’s a nice companion piece to the documentary, and it’s only 30 minutes so it’s definitely worth the watch
I really recommend this to anyone who watched 13th. It's just an interview, but it's really a great accompaniment to the documentary in that DuVernay explains the process of putting all the pieces together as well as giving some new information and expanding some things. It was really interesting and it's just about 35 minutes.
Oprah: “You mentioned that the system needs to be reconstructed. Do you honestly see that happening in our current climate?”
Ava: “In our current climate, I believe that the people can do anything. I really do. I believe that pressure from people can create change.”
Really great companion to 13th, with Ava DuVernay explaining how she made the film, the history she brought to it, and her hopes for the future.
Ava DuVernay has such a brilliant mind, and this is a perfect accompaniment to 13th.
I don't think I would have understood the remarkable depth of character, integrity and brilliance of Ava DuVernay without hearing how she sifted through hundreds of hours and conducted literally dozens of interviews herself, slowly shaping what must have been a mammoth project into something so concise and well constructed. Fucking queen. Mad respect.
The process for making this documentary is incredible, hopefully one day we can see the unseen hundreds of hours of footage!
this is so great, is it explains how the process was on discovering and making the documentary, and it touches on some things that aren’t explicitly said in the documentary.
There is nothing more impressive to me than someone talking eloquently about their or somebody else’s work. Just in awe of Ava DuVernay
This follows the documentary '13th' on Netflix. It is a fairly standard Oprah interview, but interesting to hear the director discuss the different elements in the doc and some of her editing decisions. Very interesting, in Jan-21, to hear her thoughts on Trump, whose administration had just started when this interview took place.
Ava DuVernay is genuinely such an intelligent and insightful director who I absoloutely admire. I wish I watched this sooner, hearing her talk about 13th and how much she cares about the issues her film deals with actually lit something up in me. I only hope I could ever make something like that. And Oprah is so lovely, like societies grandmother, but she also is a genius when it comes to interviewing, just like DuVernay points out.
This is a conversation worth listening to but also a conversation about a topic worth having.
the way they talked so eloquently about the justice system and how to have honest conversations with people you don't necessarily agree with but ALSO got super excited about twitter's translation feature yeah these are my two best women right here
Ava Duvernay is doing the work of public school educators all across America and the DOE should take notes. The DOE should also dismantle the school to prison pipeline and stop policing students and ban private schools but I’m not going to get into that. Just watch 13th.
