2 Herbste, 3 Winter, Zweimal Herbst und dreimal Winter
When was the last time you saw a film whose universe espoused affinity toward Eugène Green's Le monde vivant and Judd Apatow's Funny People in practically the same breath? I guess French people can handle dramedies; I want to live in that world.
2 automnes 3 hivers sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. It goes all over the place. In fact, more films should do that, so that's not a criticism. It spans from 2009 to 2012. Wow! It's definitely a saga. I'm not super-enthused about Vincent Macaigne as the lead, but he works out okay.
Overall, the film is like an updated Éric Rohmer without the charm of the French New Wave. But literally, every time I go to the…
This French RomCom reveals a very wayward and somehow awkward style of narration. Using off-screen voices, the well-embodied characters describe their actions, their feelings and their thoughts for most of the scenes, like they are recounting them. Some sequences are shown in an interview-like setting, giving the film the appearance of a documentary. The story tries to sound dramatic here and there but those dramas remain without any consequences whatsoever. Especially towards the end I lost my interest in this stylish but stuffy romance.
"2 Autumns 3 Winters" would perform nicely as a live theaters performance. The film consists of multiple story lines, told by multiple characters, allowing you into each side of the stories. This technique is always a nice method of telling deeper stories, used to much greater effect in films such as "Hillary And Jackie". And in this film, it does offer some depth and charm.
The film starts off quickly with some fun comic moments and quickly delivers likable characters.
However, in the second half, the film brings in new characters and the momentum of the film slows up, as we now have to learn new characters who don't have too much influence on the current stories.

Sebastien Betbeder brings mumblecore to France with 2 Autumns, 3 Winters, chronicling a year in the life of four Parisian characters through a series of vignettes and interview-style confessionals. While the film retains the disjointed plot and peculiar pacing typically associated with the genre, most of the trademark indifference and navel gazing is eschewed for a result that is a relaxed but focused take on modern relationships.
The charm of this picture is undeniable. Vincent Macaigne brings a goofy likability to his character, Arman, and his sincerity is well matched by the entire cast. Betbeder channels Woody Allen to good effect as Arman and friends address the camera directly, often mid-scene, with dry and self-deprecating humour. These scenes of affectionate homage avoid falling flat exactly because they are delivered with such genuineness - they function as astute observations on how often we can find ourselves in our own head.
The late-20s/early-30-something romantic (tragi)comic plot is as worn as they come, but director Sébastien Betbeder's chops make this something out of the ordinary. The tone and form shift constantly, with parts recalling everything from Hallmark Channel Christmas movies to David Lynch '80s craziness. This isn't a great movie, by any means, but shows a lot of promise for everyone involved.
57/100
The Dissolve review. A playful experimentation in form that doesn't amount to much else, though it would serve well as a primary text for a film prof's lecture on modes of direct address. Nights With Theodore was pretty wispy, too, but I still think Betbeder shows a great deal of promise—he seems open to anything, willing to follow whatever errant thought grabs him at any time (one mini-chapter here juxtaposes Eugène Green and Judd Apatow, sincerely lionizing both), and eventually he may stumble into making something pretty great.
This strange world where Eugene Green meets Judd Apatow works really well, the style is definitely original with the characters explaining their feelings and actions straight to camera like they do in Survivor. It mixes popular culture, more philosophical and intellectual ideas with traditional rom com themes. Vincent Macaigne is awkwardly charming and succeeds in leading this strange little tale of love and life of young-ish people dealing with their lives.
Tranches de vie post-moderne. Ça aurait pu être agaçant mais c’est drôle et touchant.
Five minutes in I was thinking 'uh oh, art school', but then I settled to it, it grew on me, and it worked. Didn't mind the fragmented story-line, quite liked it actually; there were one or two things that felt strained, but overall, strong.
What at first appears to be a French take on an American sort of rom.com quickly establishes itself as a sort of ode to La Nouvelle Vague. Carefully constructed and offering a story of normal people who are not simply falling in love -- they are learning to accept the sadness of life with as much hope as they can muster. It is refreshing, bittersweet and believable.
An interesting experiment. Very funny at times. Great Quotes. Real to the bone. Still needed a little bit more

2 HERBSTE 3 WINTER ist ein Filmchen für die Generation "Selber Häkeln". Prätentiös, nervig, unglaublich geschmacklos. Eine einzige Qual!

France. Comedy. Stars: Vincent Macaigne, Maud Wyler, Bastien Bouillon. Incredibly slow and boring. Stopped watching.
