One of the most interesting hero/villain relationships I've seen, certainly in a classic western.
Van Heflin's reluctant heroism seems genuine, rather than a put-on; so often you have a 'reluctant hero' that goes full John Wayne within five minutes. Heflin's moral backbone grows in front of your eyes, and it's fascinating to watch.
And Glenn Ford is just the best. He's inscrutable in the truest sense of the word, that relentless crocodile smile makes him so hard to read. It may have only lasted five minutes, but his little tryst with Felicia Farr is gloriously charged, and at the same time sort of wistful. I loved Delmer Daves sumptuous close ups of their embraces.
