Who are these bland characters and what are they doing moping around these beautifully rendered backgrounds?
Well I'll be damned if this film doesn't pack as much emotion as humanly possibly into its fleeting, sixty minute runtime. It's been a while since an animated/anime film has made me sit there with tears in my eyes throughout almost its entire length, but the sheer poetry, realism and visual beauty of 5 Centimeters Per Second portrays life in a uniquely touching way.
If you've ever been in love with someone else but knew, for some reason or some distance, that you couldn't be with them, I urge you to watch this movie; it captures that feeling perfectly. Moody kids will be moody, amiright? Moody teenagers will be moody, amiright? Moody adults will ruminate on past loves and relationships long gone by even if it keeps them from enjoying life and moving on to experience something better...amiright?
10/10 can relate though.
The sense of longing perfectly captured, first love as a fleeting memory. A train that got delayed. A train that stood between lovers. A rocket launched into the sky but where is the obligatory spur-of-the-moment kiss? Not being able to get what you want, the beautiful sky slowly losing its colors as we grow up, life depicted as nothing but tedium and disappointment.
I hate it.
I like slow movies (The Turin Horse, 2001: A Space Odyssey). I like romance movies (Carol, Chungking Express). I like movies dominated by stunning visuals and voiceover (The Tree of Life, Apocalypse Now). I like slow, visually stunning, romance movies split into three sections (The Handmaiden, Moonlight). Yet 5 Centimetres Per Second is slow, visually stunning, somewhat romantic, split into three sections and a complete failure. It's boring and uninteresting. This is a film where nothing happens, and not in a way that the some of the greatest filmmakers (e.g. Tarr, Tarkovsky) manage to make work. Instead, Shinkai fills his film with cheesy moments, pseudo-intellectual voiceover and pointless shot after pointless shot. If not for the photorealistic animation and cleverly conceived structure (which is still poorly executed), this would be an unwatchable mess. As it stands, it's merely a boring, useless film with some redeemable features. Very disappointing.
