A comedian: but I can do DRAMA, please take me seriously as an actor
My ‘difficult to adjust to changes’ ass: make me laugh CLOWN
There’s something vaguely sinister about those talking GPS navigators that now seem to come standard with every new car. Maybe it’s the robotic voice, which could never speak to the frustration of running late or sitting in traffic. More likely, it’s the illusion of control — the false sense that everything is going to be fine so long as you follow instructions and keep your eyes on the road.
Marja-Lewis Ryan’s “6 Balloons” hinges on such modern details of disquiet, with most of this perceptive (if not especially powerful) drama set inside a chatty sedan as a woman named Katie (“Broad City” star Abbi Jacobson) drives her heroin-addict brother (Dave Franco) around Santa Clarita in a desperate search for the…
the saddest movie i’ve seen all year, a film where personal catharsis can only stem from abandonment, where a baby girl sees her father pumped full of heroin trying not to die, and he has to feel himself fading next to her. has the most haunting final shot i’ve seen in a long time, the brevity of the runtime makes it feel even more tragic, like it’s over before everything becomes okay. doubt there will ever be a better performance by dave franco than his turn here, he made me cry more times than i counted. a film based on pain and love and how so often the two are inexorably linked. addiction is a curse and the addict is…
Viscerally unpleasant without offering anything to make the experience worthwhile. This is one of those movies where it wouldn't surprise me to find out that they wrote dialogue just minutes before a scene was shot. Almost every word of this felt inauthentic, even if the underlying emotions were ones I could relate to. Abbi Jacobson's character, in particular, is nonexistent. Despite the actress herself doing her best to imbue the character with some sense of personality, her arc feels forced and out of place, and her decisions throughout the film just confused me. Dave Franco's character is marginally better in terms of personality and objective, but his performance is much, much worse. As I mentioned before, so much of this…
Today I watched both a three hour long period piece and a seventy minute long Netflix movie.
You will be surprised which one was more painful to sit through.

-6 Balloons (2018), dir. and written by Marja-Lewis Ryan
Feels a bit rushed and the cinematography could be better at times, but overall a very well made and haunting drama about mental illness and heroin addiction. Marja-Lewis Ryan’s sensitive direction & script are solid, but it’s the amazing performances from Abbi Jacobson & Dave Franco (in a career best performance) that make this a decent watch.
6/10 - B-
This film is like slow piano music or asmr, really not for everyone and certainly not for me.
6 Balloons is depressing, slow, and not fun to watch. Scenes are over-dramaticized, character decisions and reactions don’t fully make sense, and it’d be more fun to watch a snail for an hour. The film has a really cute baby though.
I felt sooooo anxious. Made me perversely glad that I don't have any people really in my life
“Only stupid people OD”
I am not using this quote because I agree with it, or that there is any truth to it, but because it perfectly encapsulates for me the complete apathy towards addicts that this movie appears to have. The final messaging is nowhere near nuanced enough to land and so it really comes across negatively. Some of the decisions the main character makes are in direct opposition of what we know about her, and are actually pretty disgusting. The thing isn’t all that well acted though admittedly Dave Franco pulls together a decent performance by the end but this film it just... doesn’t mean anything. Why was this made? Who is this for? The last 5 minutes is like 40 minutes worth of discussion... what a waste and frankly annoying film.
i watch this movie whenever i want to cry and i never regret it. the use of the self help audio is masterful and it's outstanding.
This is weirdly good..
Terrible idea watching this while thinking Dave Franco is the hottest man on earth
I get that metaphors don’t have to be literal, but when the literal hurts the metaphor, that’s an issue.
made me super anxious so that made me think it was super good at first but eventually i was just waiting for it end. idk it could have been better
I'm still confused why they chose two comedians to play very serious roles but hey, you can't know everything!
This story was hard to watch but had adequate performances by Franco and Jacobson. Maybe some more plot development or fully fleshed out storyline tying it together would have helped a bit
