A Breed Apart can't quite live up to its cast and synopsis, but what movie could?
Rutger Hauer stars as a Vietnam vet who hides out in the woods, rides horseback and protects the wilderness. Kathleen Turner plays love interest and local shop owner who comes between Hauer and Powers Boothe - who has been hired (by Donald Pleasance) to acquire two rare bird eggs, which would cause the species to go extinct.
The opening stretch has some good fist fightin' but the murkey VHS transfer rendered one of the action scenes confusing. Too much effort is placed upon the love triangle, which bogs down some of the pacing with too many romantic scenes that don't totally work. Throw in a local reporter into the mix, and it's a bit overstuffed for its own good.
Not a total success, though it's worth seeing for the cast and a few effective dramatic moments.
