Five carpoolers travel in a motorhome to reach a common destination. Night falls, and to avoid a dead animal carcass, they crash into a tree. When they come to their senses, they find themselves in the middle of nowhere. The road they were traveling on has disappeared and there is only a dense, impenetrable forest and a wooden house in the middle of a clearing, which they discover is the home of a spine-chilling cult.

Everybody's all like oh this is just Midsommar but Italian but remember when midsommar came out and everybody was like oh this is just the wicker man... HAH .. OK OK it does have midsommar ingredients but it certainly does enough of its own thing and does the thing where it makes fun of itself and the horror genre in general, its gets super meta and even surreal at points.. The first 2/3's of this is super atmospheric and yes feels like a classic but minus the shit acting and all the 80's tropes (mostly minus the tropes) ... then the last 1/3 flips it all around and if you dont like a tonal shift this may be too jarring for you but i thought it was freakin' fun and fantastic ...

much better than i excepted! borrows elements from all kinds of great movies and wraps them into a strange yet entertaining experience. sometimes i felt like maybe it was trying to do too much but that’s just me being nit-picky. solid performances, great atmosphere and some gore thrown in as well. there were parts of the reveal/twist/whatever that i saw coming and others i did not. the post credit bit was a nice little touch as well. definitely a step above the majority of what netflix produces.
Why are all horror movies today coming out with titles like spooky horror movie thats like if the next comedy that comes out is called funny joke movie or something
Very disappointing. It's shot beautifully and the sound is decently made. The problem is it tries to put many horror tropes and borrows too much from The Cabin in the Woods and Midsommar without doing any of it particularly well. The best bit of this film is that one scene from the teaser on youtube. Most of the violence is off-screen which is not really surprising since it's coming from Netflix. I saw the twist coming from miles away, the meta aspect unfortunately doesn't work well in this and the redemption feels flat because it's hard to feel sympathy if you don't care about any of the characters in the first place.
This was such a fucking bizarre movie that I couldn't help but love it. I think I had read that it was supposed to be a sort of modern day homage to the Italian horror movies of the 80's and parts of it totally gave me those vibes, especially the beginning with the group of teens piled into a camper (which would have been a giant van in the 80's but close enough) and it's got that 80's silliness, but then it adds in some fun meta shit before just veering off into some super dark territory and getting weird as hell and some people will absolutely NOT vibe with this, but it's just the kind of unpredictable batshit crazy…
Honestly, I just can't get mad at this film since its rating was so low, and it's been very negative. However, that poster looks so appealing and encapsulates the movie so well. By that I mean, the film's greatest asset is its cinematography. There's no denying that the director delivers style over substance here as he pays homage to a wide range of movies, from giallo to Folk horror (read: The Wicker Man), while remaining an equal homage to many genres. In fact, many of the film also plays like a grindhouse picture.
The biggest flaw and overall problem of this film is its script. The film has plenty of great ideas, and its concept reminds me of "Berberian Sound…
99% of people who write horror films must be so fucking insufferable in real life. Always thinking they're original, quirky, inventive, groundbreaking. Just sit the fuck down and go back to telling horror stories at a kids' Halloween party.
Midsommar for teenagers who think Quentin petty bitch Tarantino is the greatest director who ever lived.
