2022 ‘დიდი შესვენება’ Directed by Davit Pirtskhalava

After 13 years, Tsitsi initiates a reunion of his former classmates with a seemingly harmless cause: they haven't seen each other since graduation and the reason for the gathering is to remember school and have a drink. However, Tsitsi has a secret motivation: he wants to punish his former classmate, Guga, who used to make life difficult for the entire class at school. Several male classmates gather at the school to drink and talk; as their time together progresses, Tsitsi gets drunk and tries to accomplish his goal.

Has an interesting ‘men would rather X than go to therapy’ premise but the overall idle, unengaged pacing, repetition and overall vagueness just left me cold overall. Perhaps just not my cup of tea.

FML Scavenger Hunt 33 Task #23: Watch a movie featuring alcohol or a prison scene
A Long Break made me want to take a long nap. Seriously, this film is so meandering. It’s filled with long, drawn out conversations that have no narrative momentum. Many of the characters were underdeveloped, and by the time things got more interesting I just didn’t care. The film is shot pretty well, and I have no complaints about the acting. But the film nearly put me to sleep. Overall, I was not a fan of this. The dialogue was never strong enough to propel the film forward, leaving me to be underwhelmed with this. A disappointment, especially since I was intrigued by the premise.

I really liked this slow, dark, brooding drama – Georgia’s entry into the 2023 Oscars – which sees a school reunion gradually reveal itself to be a revenge mission against a bully.
Not much happens, but all the while the tension builds. Good acting, well directed, and a simple story with intriguing characters that I could totally buy in to.
It’s available online in North America as part of the 1st International Feature Film Festival until April 23.

They say the same man never stands in the same river twice. The man ages, the river flows, and both are too fundamentally changed to recreate the experience. At its best, A Long Break does a really good job of capturing that sense of yearning that comes with meeting up with old friends, trying to recapture the feelings of youth and camaraderie that defined the happier and simpler days of your life. Counter to that, it deals with the psychological trauma of squaring your beliefs and values today with your actions as a child, especially when bullying or abuse have been formative experiences.

It's definitely not a comedy, but the moment in here when the guy practically alcohol passed out was envying the drugged out, barely conscious dude's "well being" hit me as some ultra bleak gallows humor of these Georgian men's condition. In general, sort of talky, fixed in structure, and fairly dimly lit, addressing bullying. I didn't think the sunniness, or squeezing in more one-off character details of the ending really fit.

Although tense in places the film telegraphed its intention too early on.
It’s unsure if it wants to be a tale about the pointlessness of revenge or a parable about the inherent good of forgiveness (which isn’t actually inherently good in the real world).
Weird religious overtones. I don’t know what life was like In Georgia, but it seems it wasn’t great.
Feels like a play that over extended itself.

Film yg sebenerya bercerita tentang upaya balas dendam terhadap bullying oleh teman sekolah dulu.
Tapi jujur fllm 1.5 jam ini terasa flat dan boring bgt. Padahal secara tema banyak yg bisa digali.
Pun kita ga dapet gambaran lbh mendalam terhadap karakter schoolmate yg disajikan di sini, cuma gambaran secara umum aja dan ya ga terlalu menarik sih.

The corrosive consequences of long-simmering resentments and regrets are slowly revealed in Davit Pirtskhalava’s feature directorial debut "A Long Break." More talky than cinematic, the film feels better suited for the stage than the big screen, but its complex approach to bullying and the burden carried by both victims and bystanders is sophisticated, even if its impact is thwarted by too many voices competing for attention.
