Nearly perfect and completely bittersweet, A Man Called Ove succeeds as both a black comedy and a heartwarming character study of the quintessential grumpy old neighbor. This is a simple little movie, but it’s incredibly poignant and consistently moving. Everyone has a story of love and loss, even if they seem like an old fart right now.
This might be a five-starrer if it didn’t have a godawful pop song over the final shot — it’s like putting a bumper sticker on a luxury sports car. If you like Up, Magnolia, As Good as It Gets, or Hunt for the Wilderpeople, try this one.

Hannes Holm’s screenplay of Fredrik Backman’s novel of A Man Called Ove (2015) is a tragi-comedy that relies on flashbacks to tell the story of a man who evolved and adapted to some of life’s worst scenarios. Rolf Lassgard (Ove) made my neck hurt as he leaned into the noose to begin taking his own life. However, Ove learns it is more difficult to kill oneself when there are loving people all around. A Man Called Ove is a wonderful tale of love, loss, friendship and... cars. Just like the book, it's straightforward, but heartwarming and bittersweet. It gives a backstory to the Grumpy Old Man you see on the street and shows that appearances are misleading more often than not.
Ove is a man with a tough exterior. Having lost his wife recently, he has a hard time letting new people in, but has an even harder time sending his neighbors, the cat, and every other person who latches onto him away. Every memory, every quirk, every action pokes at his tough exterior and reveals a (big) heart of gold.
It's difficult not to fall in love with Ove's world, as it's one where kindness reigns and even the grumpiest of Grumpy Old Men can find a reason to smile and to live.
A Man Called Ove didn’t make me tear up. A Man Called Ove made straight-up ugly cry.
After seeing the American remake, A Man Called Otto starring Tom Hanks, I was determined to watch the original Swedish film. While I actually quite enjoyed A Man Called Otto, A Man Called Ove just is simply better in almost every facet.
Ove is an orderly old man who has largely given up on life after the passing of his wife, but before moving on from this world there are some new neighbors that need help, a cat that needs a home, and a corporation that needs to be put in its place.
A Man Called Ove works equally as a dark comedy…
One thing is certain though:
Whatever we do in this life
no one gets out of it alive.
Really psyched to see another watered down American remake of a superior foreign film. At least this one will have old man Tom Hanks in his first comedic role since the classic *checks notes* Larry Crowne.
A Man Called Ove is a beautiful, touching Swedish film that is yet also about as dark as dark comedy can get, so much so that I’m inching towards calling it an outright drama. Regardless, it’s a compellingly heartfelt story of a widowed man hardened by grief and sorrow who reluctantly allows bits of happiness back into his life through the kindness of his youthful neighbors. Simple and awww-inducing. Rolf Lassgård is perfectly cast.
For real though, fuck outta here with these movies where a guy’s wife passes away and he can’t bear to be without her. I can’t handle that shit 💔
