Taymor is not an actor’s director. If the actors aren’t already good before they come to one of her projects then they usually suck pretty hard.
She continually hires very attractive twinky white boys who are HORRIBLE with Shakespeare’s language (see Jonathon Rhys Meyers in Titus, see Reeve Carney in The Tempest and see Jake Horowitz here).
I must admit, I have a chip on my shoulder with privileged wine drinking white ladies who seem to make art for wealthy people who can afford tickets to see their art, so Julie Taymor annoys me. She’s too woke to be a Karen kinda thing. I can just see her talking through things ‘wouldn’t it be wonderful if...’. Maybe this a personal…
My kingdom for a Midsummer adaptation where the four lovers realize they’re all poly by the end.
I wish this was twenty percent more of a movie, though in all fairness if Bergman's Magic Flute counts I suppose this one does too. (There is more cinema in it than one might expect, which speaks as much to the influence on Taymor's stage production than the nature of the project.)
Uniformly strong cast, met with some truly excellent entrances and scene transitions, on the Taymor scale it falls short of the gonzo Titus, but well above the flailing WTFery of The Tempest.
julie taymor is just...such a fucking cool director. the spectacle, julie! the sheer SPECTACLE! i don't even usually LIKE this play!
The reimagining of Bottom as an Italian American guido: YES
The reimagining of Puck as Bolbi from Jimmy Neutron: NO
shout out to kanopy fr i wasn’t sure if i was going to be able to watch this production
I was lucky enough to see this production when it ran in New York, and in the filmed version, as on stage, Kathryn Hunter's performance as Puck is the high point of the show. The woman is a unique and inventive actor and grabs your attention every moment she's on stage (or in the air).
