If you've seen any mid-90s (or more recent) TV movie about a young woman seeking justice for a rape that occurred in a college's out-of-control frat house, whatever it is surely has to be better than A Reason to Believe (available for free on YouTube), an indie drama so lacking in just about every department that I would swear it really was made for the small screen, were it not for the F-bombs, nudity, and R-rated depictions of sexual assault and consensual sex. Did screenwriter/director Doug Tirola know anything about human relationships? Or how to write women in believable ways? Not judging by this work, it seems.
My only causes for giving this awful excuse for cinema an entire star…

A story that still happens all too often, told in the most after school special way possible, albeit quite R-rated.
Were it handled in a more subtle manner, were every male character not the biggest shit stain ever and if it didn't look like a movie filmed by students for a special credit course in college, there would be something here. Unfortunately, it's an important story executed poorly.
Not only is it nearly 2 hours of just watching the same pattern of People Will Believe The Man Always, The Woman Never on repeat, not only does it decide dramatically to follow up the story of the victim's boyfriend's feelings with him initiating a strange threeway sex revenge that includes the man who raped the woman he claimed to love (enough that he balls his fist and sticks it in her face while he shouts "don't you dare lie to me!") in the triangle, but the film jumps right From The Rape to a scene of the entire frat reading off a list of every single woman each guy had sex with at the party. Although things have improved greatly, when this film was made during the early nineties, rape often went unreported. Making a statement against letting sleeping dogs lie, A Reason to Believe takes a strong stance against the abuse of women. It almost makes a strong stance for women’s rights as well, falling short only because of hypocrisy.
