This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

A bit sentimental yes, but still well written and ultimately a beautiful and very touching film on coping with loneliness and neglect along with your usual shitty husband and fascism. Realistically depressing too. I really wanted Antonietta to leave her husband in the end but sadly she doesn't. And she can only watch as Gabriele is arrested because of who he is. It's a nitpick but I didn't really like the fact that these two characters would sleep together but…

Naturally the fascists were too boring to handle the immense power of a gay sweater vest wearing Marcello Mastroianni

    Una Giornata Particolare (1977)

    ★★★★★

Simply extraordinary. Amazing that this was made in 1977. What an extraordinary portrayal of fascism and what a masterclass in acting. Only the ending lets it down a little, pushing the desperation of the housewife to the point of making love with a homosexual goes a little too far.

When you think of actresses who could convincingly play a downtrodden housewife your mind does not jump to legendary sex symbol Sophia Loren who was at her best when she played roles that allowed her to show off her movie star charisma. I just hate it when beautiful film stars try to convince us that they are tortured, ordinary people and Loren’s performance in Two Women (1960) smacked of pretension to me as she was trying too hard throughout that…

Does not need any comments. The encounter between a woman of the system and a prodder Mastroianni, two different realities, fascist and anti-fascist, that collide in "a particular day". Exciting, emotional, intense, top notch performances, cinematography, screenplay. A must watch.
