Summer, 1967. La Goulette, the touristic beach of Tunisi, is the site where three nice seventeen-year-old girls live: Gigi, sicilian and catholic; Meriem, Tunisian and Arab; Tina, French and Jewish. They would like to have their first sexual experience during that summer, challenging their families. Their fathers, Youssef, Jojo and Giuseppe, are old friends and their friendship will be in crisis because of the girls, while Hadj, an old rich Arab, would like to marry Meriem.

Incredible ensemble cast. Every character (and the actors playing them) are unique and memorable. Reminds me of PUBERTY BLUES but better imho.

A highly controversial coming of age under the cover of comedy.
For anyone unfamiliar with the political climate in Tunisia, this may seem like a bland and boring sunny slice of life with a colorful cast.
Antisemitism in Tunisia is a touchy subject, although hardly a secret. In 1995, broaching the subject that Jewish people of Tunisia are entirely unwelcome in public places such as the cafés, was already pushing the envelope; Let alone presenting the harsh reality that most Jewish Tunisians are even EXPECTED to leave the country.
To level things out with the audience, it seems, is also mentionned the profound islamophobia that Christians harbor, disgusted by the mere thought of a daughter of theirs eloping with a…

Three teenage girls of different faiths decide to lose their virginity one summer in the late 60’s. Sounds like the premise of an early 80’s T&A movie. But instead of spring break in Fort-Lauderdale or Palm Springs, it’s in the port town of La Goulette, Tunis, Tunisia, which happens to be Claudia Cardinale’s birthplace. And instead of a barrage of sophomoric sex gags, it’s a quaint coming of age tale focusing on the universal journey of horny teens wanting to get some action, but with the added complications of dealing with the cultural, religious and political mores of the time within this really fascinating north African setting.
Claudia Cardinale plays herself 30 years later than what she’s supposed to be, which is really weird and surreal. But hey, why not have her play the part?
Thought Provoking!
The film feels very real, it is pleasant, it is wonderful, it is nostalgic, a bit dramatic and emotional too. Even though the film is slow-paced, it doesn't let you lose interest for even a second. The use of eroticism is utilised properly.
The dialogues and the characters are very relevant; maybe because the movie explores the basic human behaviour and psychology, which makes it more interesting. Wonderful cast and awesome Direction.
I'd really like to visit Tunisia one day, especially La Goulette...
This movie, which was shot in the seaside of Tunisia, is about three teenage girls (one Jewish, one Muslim and one Catholic) who decide they all want to lose their virginity by a certain date. They are all neighbours living in an apartment complex, so when their fathers find out, problems ensue. Then there is a creepy old man, called Hadj, who owns the apartment building and is almost literally drooling over one of the girls, who is young enough to be his granddaughter.
The cinematography is really great and the scenery is beautiful, with lots of sand and sunshine. And Claudia Cardinale, who is from Tunisia, makes a special guest appearance. All in all, just a really pleasant film, directed by Ferid Boughedir. I'll have to try some more of his films.
That quote at the top of the cover is so off base, haha. Insanely erotic? Ok, maybe if the person who said it is from Tunisia, tits aren't a standard ingridient in films from muslim nations, I guess.
As for "comedy". Yes, it tries it's hand at some sort of comedy, but it fell completely flat in my view.
This is, of course, a first for me. Tunisian, or even African films aren't part of my usual diet. As is expected, the exotic environment of La Goulette, set to the summer of 1970, is what drew me in. This is the image of an idyllic, peaceful place, a "paradise on Earth" as one of the mothers describes it, a place where Jews, Christians and Muslims live side-by-side happily. It has a nostalgic view of a simpler time, when it seemed like there might still be a hope for peace in the Middle East. It's a fun film, part coming-of-age, part slice-of-life, part comedy. None of the performances stand out, but all of them were decent and the girls were all very lovely, especially the girl who plays Meriem. It's also a film where summer is fleeting, a time to enjoy romance and live without worries before the coming storms. Recommended for just about anyone, unless you don't like subtitles.
