In this pitch black comedy the rivalry between two neighbors escalates into an all out war. Through a maintenance error on a tractor they both end up, paralyzed, in a wheelchair. It seems they are doomed to stay together. They no longer focus their rage on each other but on the manufacturer of the tractor, in Helsinki. So get ready for a hilarious wheelchair road movie.

Aaltra is a slow-moving dark comedy about two men who get paralysed in an accident while trying to kill each other, and find that they have to work together in order to travel to Finland to seek compensation from the farming equipment company responsible for their injuries. It starts out incredibly ponderously, but once the odd couple get out the road, it's pretty funny - the two leads are such dicks, it's great fun watching them outstay their welcome with everyone they meet.

Absurd to say the least, but great road buddy flick. There’s s many good dead pen bits and wraps up very nicely. If you enjoy a dark tale of shitty people who , stay shitty when there life gets even shitter, your in for a treat.
Two paraplegics in wheelchairs, and they're both major assholes; they play on peoples' sympathies and then exploit their generosity like a pair of big ruddy id monsters. Movie's tailor-made for Kaurismaaki fans. I mean that quite literally.

With this, I found a great example of an unknown obscurity which, when dusted off, proved to be a little gem. A pretty salty one which has clear inspiration from the work of Aki Kaurismäki, befitting as he has a cameo in a major role in the ending. Two men, after an argument by a piece of farming equipment, become paralyzed in wheelchairs. Whilst it is agonizing for one of them, who was passionate for motorbike racing, the pair decide to travel to one such event with complete disregard for good taste.

I'm not sure if the laughs I got from this came from legitimate funny moments or just recognizing that something was indeed a joke.
But it's definitely the kind of dark comedy that I like. Two unlikable guys get paralyzed by being idiots and go and blame someone else instead of ever thinking that it's their own fault.
Then they find a world that still treats them like people and calls them out for being assholes and doesn't coddle them because they're disabled.
This could be material for a crap American remake with like Will Ferrel and Jonah Hill taking a road trip across the country but instead of a van it's wheelchairs and they're both dicks.
Aaltra is about two slackers who suffer severe injuries from construction equipment (manufactured by Aaltra) that leave each of them paralyzed. They wind up at the same hospital, but are unceremoniously tossed due to the fact that the hospital has done as much for them as they can.
While the two start out disliking one another, they come together over time on a mutual quest: to seek recompense against Aaltra for their paralysis. In that sense, there's a little bit of a road trip vibe to the movie as the duo travel from France to Aaltra's location in Belgium.
There are no heavy-handed punch lines in this movie, but I found the movie pretty funny throughout; I was often caught up in the ridiculousness of the duo and the many situations they find themselves in, as well as how willing the duo are to take advantage of others. Entertaining throughout, and with a slight touch of the absurd.

A black comedy with a unique atmosphere. The introduction is a bit convoluted but all the scenes are joyfully weird.

Watched it after seeing this clip played at a lecture on Buster Keaton.
It is by far and away the best bit of this otherwise ramshackle, repetitive roundelay. Kervern and Delépine's Louise-Michel is much better.
