ABEL
Edipo mexicano
The kids that played Abel (Christopher Ruiz-Esparza) and Paul (Gerardo Ruiz-Esparza) were fantastic. The best child performances, this year, next to James Rolleston in Boy. A fine directorial debut from Diego Luna.
An early Garcia-Bernal/Luna production, before their movies became vehicles for insipid blue-check liberalism. It's not awful. It's cute that little Abel, with his delusional systen about being the man of the house, always ends up in the TV room watching 1940s movies about the ethical dimensions of parenting. Cute but meaningless. Where are the filmmakers who would integrate that into the movie's subtextual messaging?
i don’t rlly know how i felt about this movie, but one thing for sure is that it had a heart to it. and with all honesty, i think that’s the most important thing a movie must have in order to be it’s authentic self. abel was heartwarming all throughout and had a strange but fun protagonist. the writing at times was a bit iffy but when looking at the bigger picture it didn’t affect much (most times). the mom in the movie WAS MY FAVORITE. many layers to her character and seeing her try and cope with what her son was going through was a heart wrenching experience. she was so busy protecting his brain that she didn’t protect…
The directorial debut of Diego Luna. 'Abel' was a movie I was looking forward to watch from a long time ...then I remember my sis had it on her blu-ray collection so I borrowed it.
Not bad, but I was kinda expecting more ...it's sweet story though and there's a lot funny situations, those involving the little kid playing his father. The end took me by surprise, no doubt about it but I'd love seeing more story and character development before getting into that sad ending, but that's just my opinion.
About Diego Luna directing, I liked more his second feature, 'Mr. Pig' ...but here in 'Abel' I believe it was a great starting.
Extra points for having the movie set in Aguascalientes.
The problem with this movie is that the central plot seems to come out of nowhere. There's a rather slow start where the dysfunctional family has to deal with the young child Abel coming back into their home from the psychiatric care institution where he'd previously been staying. Then, all of a sudden without any clear explanation, Abel changes. The thing that annoys me most about this is that Abel hadn't even been speaking up until this point. The idea that he should suddenly be able to gain a sense of authority fails to match up with what we'd seen earlier on in the movie.
The central premise, however, is that Abel comes to act as if he's the dad…
