Three generations of the Phadke family live and work together in South Bombay. As they prepare for a family wedding, director Archana Atul Phadke, who is not in any hurry to marry, observes the shifting, often very funny household dynamics, as both her mother and grandmother wonder how they have tolerated their husbands for so long.

The Phadke family, like many in India, live together with multiple generations at home. While at first a blisteringly funny look at some dysfunction and quarrels, About Love becomes a powerful documentary about the titular bond which can be strained even beyond repair.

I liked this documentary even if the premise is very simple. It focuses on the filmmakers' family and is mostly shot within their family home. I laughed a lot because it reminds me a lot of my Middle Eastern/Indian family and is very relatable. Even though everyone has their flaws in the movie you can tell that the family cares a lot for each other.
Director Archana Atul Phadke's grandmother is easily the standout in this movie that looks at her family that stays at Phadke House, in South Bombay. The movie starts off with a screed against skyscrapers, seen by the director and her sister as they drive on a Lower Parel flyover. They worry about their own home going under redevelopment, and while redevelopment is never mentioned again, we understand why they feel so about it.
The Phadke House is a three-floor bungalow surrounded by chawls and other such early twentieth-century buildings. The bungalow is occupied by 7-8 members of the Phadke family, who seem close-knit. To have this house taken down and have the family cut away from their generational home is…
I loved this documentary. Never had I ever laughed, clapped, tried hard to control my tears in such quick successions. Hat's off to Archana for her bravery, confidence and determination to make this beautiful film.

I've spent a bit of time this week adding some of the lesser-seen films from Doc/Fest to TMDB, because my logging diary is completely comprehensive and I just can't miss anything! Anyway, a friend clued me in on this and I thought it sounded quite funny and quirky. I wasn't actually able to finish it, I found the setting got old quick and save for the mother (she was amazing) I wasn't interested in a lot of what was happening. Just quite slow and inconclusive. You pretty much know what About Love is trying to say from the get go and I didn't feel it provided a fresh angle or perspective unfortunately

DocEdge2020 #09: A glimpse into the lives of the Phadke family and the love that exists even if it can be hidden in the day to day interactions.
Pretty much a typical Indian family so found it instantly relatable but I appreciated what the director was going for and her family was pretty hilarious at times.
I loved this documentary. Never had I ever laughed, clapped, tried hard to control my tears in such quick successions. Hat's off to Archana for her bravery, confidence and determination to make this beautiful film.
