sheesh. this stefano guy is a tough nut to crack.
i actually had to take a sec and skim some interviews (1 and a half interviews.. im lazy) to get at least some assurance in, because, like he said, you could read this film however you wanted to. similar to sicario 2.
the plain is - if someone with far right, racist, anti immigrant, fascist beliefs goes into this film, they'll be reassured in their beliefs. more so than with sicario 2, since that film doesn't come close to touching the nerve that's layed so bare in this european context. (for me at least, as europan. and because america isn't new to turning such things into entertainment, so it's usually…
"What a relief. An insane guy and a cripple watch my back."
This was an absolute spontanteous buy. I just got it because it was 3 bucks and I wanted to hit the 22 € mark to save shipping on some website.
Not knowing anything about this film beforehand I was pleasantly surprised to see that this film is set from the policemans point of view rather than from the outside or maybe victims of policeforce point of view.
While I thought the situations were a bit crass at points (Does Italy really have such a big problem with respect for authority that whole stadiums chant anti police songs on a regular basis?) the interpersonal relationships felt very real.
"A.C.A.B."…
A gritty, visceral, and complex examination of the hypocrisy and aggressively grotesque nature of Italy's riot police unit, A.C.A.B. – All Cops Are Bastards marks an impressive directorial debut from future Soldado helmer Stefano Sollima, with gripping performances and beautiful cinematography.
Probably my least favourite Sollima, but still a solid film. Almost like a Johnnie To film but grittier.
Contemporary Italian crime is becoming a favourite genre, any recs are always welcome.
An impartial insight into the Italian police situation nowadays.
Impressive debut for Sergio Sollima's son.
300th review written AND 3000th film logged on Letterboxd!
A.C.A.B. is the kind of movie Luc Besson would write a basic outline for and produce for a younger director, had Luc Besson been Italian, rather than French.
A clan of sympathetic riot cops with cool personalities, funny antics, and good deeds done are supplied with plenty of justification for acting unhinged. They do bad things that just need to get done, including a white guy punching his black ex-wife in the face... because who hasn't lost a custody battle and wanted to live out that fantasy vicariously?
While ACAB hits on many serious topics related to problematic police culture, it does so in plot, never in tone. The result being, a competently filmed buddy cop flick with a dark edge that isn't likely to win over viewers discovering it in 2020 based on the freshly popularized acronym.
Quindi: niente gadgets tecnologici, armi sofisticate o Aston Martin.
