Air Jordan, แอร์ แผนล่าลายเซ็นยอดตำนาน
Who doesn’t love a good dad movie? AIR finds Ben Affleck skillfully directing a stripped down, inspirational story of a business dealing that changed sports and the lives of many many people. This movie won’t change the cinematic landscape but it doesn’t need to. It’s the sort of predictable, smooth, entertaining film that’s easy to make but hard to make well. Solid writing & performances from the whole charismatic cast. Matt Damon’s speech (you’ll know it when you see it) is going to be quoted again and again for years to come.
Old school heart-on-its-sleeves crowd-pleaser that hits all the familiar beats but does so with an electric ensemble and snappy dialogue. It’s essentially meetings and nerdy basketball talk for two hours yet is so propulsive and consistently engaging—even when the filmmaking is rather elementary and its messaging largely undercooked. Everyone is just having the time of their lives here and it’s all a joy to watch. Affleck has a winner on his hands.
I don’t know anything about basketball (or any sport for that matter - shocking, I know), but Air is such a classic “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” crowdpleaser that I didn’t care. A razor-sharp script, propulsive pacing, and an all-star ensemble - this is what the movies were made for etc etc etc
(Also, I was not prepared for how sexy Chris Messina would be as a sleazy, snarky agent and it is my civic duty to inform all the other film girls and gays so there you go)
on one hand, this really only works cause it has a ton of charismatic stars. on the other hand, it does have a fuck ton of charismatic stars

when Ben Affleck introduced the film he seemed the happiest i’ve seen him in years, and now having seen it…it makes sense!!
It’s basically Moneyball meets Argo, with lots of great paper-flipping, pen-clicking, telephone picking up and hanging up sound effects, plus Matt Damon is finally fat (Fat Damon). Those are all selling points right there. On the other hand, athlete hero worship is something I don’t relate to at all, so when the movie treats Michael Jordan like Martin Luther King, Jr. it feels like a bit much. Growing up in Utah, I was rooting against him, and even got a stern talking-to once for drawing a picture of a Jazz vs. Bulls game where Jordan was jumping through the air with a poop coming out of his butt. But then again, even I had a pair of Air Jordans bought on clearance when I was in elementary school. I don’t know, I could’ve used a little more nose-tweaking of corporate capitalism, Nike and Jordan. It has a surprising “greed is good” mentality.
Ben Affleck looked so happy introducing his movie with all his friends in it 🥹
Oh yeah the movie was fine!
Pairs well with ZODIAC, another gorgeously shot period-accurate piece about middle-aged professionals on the West Coast obsessing over and successfully burnishing the reputation of a legendary sociopath.
Love to see a corporation winning!! I hope this movie inspires young corporations all around the world to dream big and exploit child labor abroad while paying just enough lip service to acknowledge that fact, move on, and really rake it in!
This is the last movie I expected to feature the most iconic bit of Pino Donaggio’s score for BODY DOUBLE, one of my very favorite pieces of movie music ever, for the shoe reveal.
That movie came out the year AIR is set, so it’s a fun detail! I’ve also been told it has Tangerine Dream’s FIRESTARTER score in there too, another ‘84 movie.
