After a brief hiatus to pursue other personal projects I'm back at my journey down the rabbit hole of Alice in Wonderland films with a recent viewing of this version out of England from the 70's. Just as the 1933 version did this one advertises an all-star cast, yet the only cast member's name I recognize is Peter Sellers. I honestly thought this version was quite a capable telling of the story despite some fairly bad musical numbers. I've been feeling a little burnt out lately, so I figured I'd rifle through my loose tea stash, pluck out my old hardback of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and watch William Sterling's adaptation for the first time.
Right off the bat, I love how charming the set design is; the film almost looks like a huge children's pop-up book with the characters running along the surface. The props, models and costumes combine to create a playful theatrical spectacle and the narrative very closely adheres to Lewis Carroll's novel. Much of the dialogue is siphoned directly from the book and this version even includes the Mock Turtle. Alice's Adventures In Wonderland is a fabulous phantasmagoria about young Ms. Liddell and her strange encounters on the far side of the rabbit hole.
The entire film very much evokes the flavor of Lewis Carroll's curiously wonderful literary works. The costuming in the film is superb; I particularly liked Bill the lizard, the White Rabbit, and the Red Queen and King and their court of cards. Alice's varying sizes throughout her adventures are depicted excellently with special effects and shifts in scale. The scene with the Duchess, her porcine baby, and her pepper-obsessed crockery-flinging cook was a particular favorite.

Low quality sound really drags this down. The songs aren't revolutionary, but they deserve better than this murky print. The costumes are creative, bright, fun, and though the acting is at times over-the-top, it's not out of place with this story. This version adheres pretty closely to what I remember of the book, though there's surely some changes I don't recognize. It's much more serious about its weirdness.
This adaptation of Lewis Carroll's weird and wonderful book tries hard to do justice to its source, but doesn't quite get there. The music by John Barry is saccharine and unmemorable for the most part; although things do pick up when the Mock Turtle and Gryphon (Michael Hordern and Spike Milligan, inspired casting!) lead Alice in a mad dance.
Young Fiona Fullerton looks the part and sings well - she'd go on to front a number of musicals - but the other characters just stop on the wrong side of odd and scary, making them not frightening in the least.

The familiar Victorian classic Alice's Adventures In Wonderland, was first published in 1865. Written by author, Lewis Carroll (real name - Charles Dodgson), this fantasy-adventure story has been adapted to both the stage and screen countless times. There's the familiar, miserably underrated Walt Disney animated classic in 1951, whilst there is an endless number of live-action adaptations that have largely failed to capture the true spirit and flavour of Lewis Carroll's vivid vision of Wonderland.
This 1972 adaptation is, refreshingly, something of an exception and stands out as the best live-action version of the book. Director William Sterling shrewdly evokes the dark and often frightening vision of Wonderland as dreamed up by Lewis Carroll.

Visually very beautiful but stagey adaptation of Alice In Wonderland. Fiona Fullerton is a charming Alice and some of the starry cast are great. The Mad Hatter tea party is so fun, especially with Peter Sellers' March Hare. Costumes are all great, but the pacing is awful. All of the songs grind the film to a halt and the spark of my favourite Alice adaptations is missing. A shame considering the rest of the film's delights.
I love how expressive this Alice is. They really are making her have more fun in Wonderland than in the book but it works because the actress herself is lovely.
The sets and costumes are also great and far less horrifying than the 80s version. The special effects are even better. Plus, it has Peter Sellers absolutely killing it with his horrified March Hare stare and a drag Duchess!
However, the pacing is whack and the mostly unncessary musical numbers don't help. Also, there is a serious lack of Cheshire Cat.

One of the better Alice movies I've seen thus far. Up there with the original animated Disney one in my opinion, it's interesting that Peter Sellers was in 2 drastically different versions of the same story, which we'll get to that later trust me. Pretty good though all things considered.
