  Cameron's tin-eared writing plus Rodriguez's juvenilia is as dire as you'd expect, but Cameron's design and FX perfectionism plus Rodriguez's simple (and finally well-employed) economy is as tantalizing as it sounds. This is all over the place, an often eye-popping (sometimes literally) YA dystopia with some of the clumsiest writing and performances of either filmmakers' careers and a halting narrative that promises alien wars and global socioeconomic upheaval but delivers robot swordfights and Rollerball tournaments. A mess I will probably sit through a few more times.

  "Whose body is this?"

  A film about bodies, identity, digital performance and engineered selfhood. A film about dysphoria and the joy of altering yourself to match how you feel. (Cis ppl do not interact!!) Rosa Salazar gives one of the best performances I've ever seen in a film. I do not trust anyone who doesn't at the very least find something of interest here. I found much more than that.

  Digital and corporeal self-actualization—our relationship to our shells and the complex power structures that wield control over them. Color me surprised to find a YA dystopia interested in narrative economy, visual detail, and character. (Thanks James Cameron?) The production design that evokes Japanese transhuman cyberpunk and repurposes it in a post-war, American refugee context is unbelievably gorgeous, as is the kinetic fluidity of the action. First time in a while I've been sequel-baited and actually cared enough to want to see more. Bring on Alita 2.
