  This is the story of Yuichi, a 14 year old Japanese boy in the rural area of Ashikaga, Tochigi Prefecture. Just about as quiet and introverted as anyone could imagine, he passes his days never making a connection or even speaking to anyone.

  Set before a backdrop of cruelty and psychical abuse at school, Yuichi’s only interests are Kuno, a beautiful talented schoolmate, and Lily Chou-Chou, an alternative rock star with a huge underground fan following. For Yuichi there are two worlds that exist simultaneously – school, where he is beaten and harassed by his schoolmates , and the ether (the Internet), where he is known as philia, the site manager of fan chat room for Lily.

  No. No. No. No. No. This can't go on, I am too weak to take all these. It isn't fair, the way such controversial scenes are filmed so brilliantly. This is torture, I tell you. All About Lily Chou-Chou invites you inside then violently pushes you away, the magnetic combination of music and scenery draws you to approach closer and closer, then punishes you for doing so. My heart was tugged from all directions. It's tearing me apart.

  To put it simply, Lily Chou-Chou tells a tragic story about friendship and betrayal. Due to the discontinuous timeline, I find it hard to grasp fully what was actually going on, and at this point, I'm just too afraid to endure it again, no matter how mesmerizing the music is. Can't believe I'm saying this, but I actually had a more comfortable experience with Visitor Q last night. I guess it's better to feel disturbed than to be this depressed.

  Humiliation. Rape. Murder. Bullying. How can a film that does not shy away from the most horrific of subjects look so beautiful?

  Unchecked teen angst fueled by the ignorance of adults is not an uncommon theme, but it's rarely been portrayed with as much beauty and emotion as it has been here. Anonymous message boards serving as a place for people to find solace in. People who would have spiraled deeper into depression if it weren't for a celebrity or a show to hold on to. Something that's worth living for. To the people that have it all figured out in their lives, the idea of idol worship as life-saving might seem absurd. But it's not.

  You have to keep in mind that this movie isn't about a story or a big climax. The movie's more of a collection of memories. Every scene is the film at its best, there's not a single shot that isn't perfect for the tone and attempt at teen emotion. Every shot of someone on the train listening to their favorite band, or on a long walk home from school is perfect. It's perfect.

  When online, you are removed from your body, your history, your former 'self', an abstract entity allowed to re-construct a new one. Yeah, I'm really being that person pointing out the complexities of online identity while on an online forum, but it's so hard not to talk about when All About Lily Chou-Chou is one of the greatest films at depicting such disconnect.

  In it are two characters who hate their real selves. There's no specific reason, just the endless stresses put on them by their home, school, social life. They find themselves isolating from the world, spiraling down into a dark place they may not come back from, and with no one there to help them up…

  I could talk about how this film made me laugh and reminisce about my days as a stupid, angsty teenager, and all the nostalgia associated with it.

  I could talk about how this film reminded me of one of my favourite animated films of all time, and how beautiful yet unconventional some of the camerawork was.

  I could talk about how the soundtrack was something that was both stylistically interesting and complimented the visuals in what was intended (and succeeded) in being an ethereal accompaniment.

  But instead I am going to emphasise about how tone-deaf and ethically irresponsible this film is in depicting both sexual violence and depression amongst teenagers, that the execution of these complicated issues felt so unjustified,…

  Like being trapped in your favorite song; caught frozen in the last scenery that took your breath away. Brings me back to all those sleepless nights with Itsue (Goodbye, Maboroshi would fit perfectly here), grilling study sessions with The Strokes, long bus rides with Death Cab For Cutie, Mt. Washington in Life is Strange, Louis Armstrong at the end of 12 Monkeys. A capsule holding all those fantasized, clichéd music videos -- e.g. screaming in the rain while our song reaches its final chorus, a la Simple Plan circa 2003, etc. etc. Like a reenacment of the dreams of Debussy, but in broad daylight, kites and rainbow in place of Clair de Lune.
