This is always going to play well to a liberal left-leaning audience (and I guess I have to out myself as one of that number) and while the central idea that all governments lie isn't an entirely surprising posit, that many mainstream media organisations are complicit in perpetuating those lies is slightly more of a revelation. However in giving entirely laudatory exposure to more independent media outlets is good to see, for balance, we really needed to see independent outlets from the right given the opportunity to have their say, whatever one might think of their views.
Slightly disconnected and all over the place but nonetheless very shocking and despressing. The bits about the unmarked mass grave were absolutely insane and really revealing of our corrupt country.
Okay yeah so this was good and infuriating and all but damn they couldn't pick one focus point? I was so interested in the burial story in Texas and could've watched a whole documentary on that. Too bad they only came back to it every 20-or so minutes.

Based on the life and work, as well as a particularly relevant bon mot of independent investigative journalist I.F. Stone, the title if tre documentary is a bit misleading, but likely intentionally and not maliciously so. As I.F. Stone had said, it is s given that all governments lie. However, thus documentary is not so much condemning those governments ad it us condemning the media (of all stripes and forms and ideologies) of being complicite in the perpetuating of those lies. The documentary dies an excellent job highlighting the importance of a free press and an independent press that is not dependent on government and corporations for their survival. never really GASP at films anymore but when they pulled out those skulls?????? Fuck
We are all SCREWED
The seemingly brash title of Fred Peabody’s latest documentary alludes to a turn of phrase commonly posited by one of America’s most integral investigative journalists, Isidor Feinstein Stone. Initially promoting a central focus to be that of the life, times, and impact of I.F. Stone; the subsequent docu is far less a reconstruction of the writer’s life and more of how the functionality of journalism has strayed from its true purpose.
Though the presentation and pacing of the work is scatterbrained and at times more dramatic than informative, the emotional resonance through its deconstruction of the affair between mass media and the State makes for weighty subject matter. All Governments Lie: Truth, Deception, and the Spirit of I.F. Stone is an incendiary yet investigative doc that clearly states that those who remain silent are as complicit as those who perpetrate wrongdoing.
This fantastic documentary focuses on, as the title says, how all governments lie going as far back you can imagine and how it's even more true today. How the current main stream press and media enable them to lie by sticking to the entertaining news stories opposed to the important news in a "bread and circuses" tried and true method going back to ancient Rome. How actual journalism is a rarity these days and offers some excellent alternatives, including Matt Taibbi who I've enjoyed for years now. Extremely well put together and informative and most of all important. Don't keep your eyes closed because having them open is too scary. Take the 90 minutes and do yourself the favour.. Watch it!
