A scary-funny British satire that cringes in horror at the all too familiar sort of affluent, over-educated millennials who are somehow both self-obsessed and deeply ashamed of themselves at the same time, Andrew Gaynord’s queasily entertaining “All My Friends Hate Me” unpacks a weekend in Devon into a bitter little picnic of modern discomfort.
Its story hinges on a simple notion about the unnatural forces that might compel a 31-year-old neurotic like Pete (co-writer Tom Stourton) to keep even his most toxic college friendships on life support: He’s mortified about the man he used to be, but the only people who can let him off the hook are the ones who knew him back then. They’re the only ones who…
Great acting, underwhelming story. It would be a stretch or fake advertisement to label All My Friends Hate Me as either comedy or horror. Instead, it's more of a slow-burn drama/character study that examines the discomfort of reuniting with old friends and meeting strangers, especially when secrets and paranoia are involved. It's by no means boring, thanks to its memorable cast, but at the end of the day, All My Friends Hate Me is no more than what its one-dimensional storyline stands for.
Tom Stourton and Dustin Demri-Burns are definitely the saving graces here since their chemistry and perfect executions of their respective characters provide the buoy that keeps the momentum flowing. It's admirable how this movie captures the unease…
fuck, they made a film about me
edit: fuck, i just remembered the other film they made about me, The Worst Person in the World. would make for a great double feature for someone who's not me
Tribeca Film Festival 2021
As a person who has gone through the paranoia of thinking my friends didn’t like me every time I wasn’t invited to something, or whenever I didn’t get a reply to a text message yet they’d be online, i found this anxiety trip to be extremely relatable. All My Friends Hate Me is a great effort at dissecting the condescending and cryptic behavior we often get from interacting with friends. It cleverly masquerades the suspense with awkward (and funny!) situations, so considered me impressed with this Tribeca selection.
How much you enjoy All My Friends Hate Me will probably depend on your ability to endure its suffocating cringe comedy. Andrew Gaynord’s film captures the overwhelming experience of anxiety to a painful degree, inducing both macabre laughs and sheer suspense, but also making for a sometimes agonising watch.
