[Seen at the 2016 Sidewalk Film Festival]
As much as I love Paul Sparks in just about everything, he’s not given much to do here.
There are some beautifully framed shots and compelling images here, but overall it felt dark, gritty, and aimless for the sake of being dark, gritty, and aimless. And when it did have something to say, it was way too on-the-nose with its symbolism. The crow, the crufcifix, Tonya’s knuckle tattoos, etc.
This film will find its audience by virtue of its stars and its style, but the substance just didn’t connect for me.
Shout out to the Miller Brothers anyway though for shooting this in their native state of Arkansas.
