Sorta Like a Rock Star
i think it’s time we end the stigma that all netflix teen movies are bad because this was surprisingly really good. sure, when it comes to movies like the kissing booth, we have our exceptions but this was a solid crowd pleaser and there’s really no point of hating on this film without any reason.
After the absolute mindfuck that i’m thinking of ending things was, I was in the need for something easy to understand and fairly lighthearted.
Truthfully, I had assumed this was going to be like a majority of Netflix’s other recent originals for teens: hypersexualized (? they do that for what?), overly quirky, and reminiscent of better made/acted films they always seem to be copying in some way. However, All Together Now was a pleasant surprise in a handful of ways and also painfully too relatable in others.
The cast is refreshingly diverse in a way that works extremely well and while the characters carry the typical quirk that Netflix insists on giving anyone with more than five minutes of screen…
the moral of the story is that if you're homeless you should just learn how to be an extremely talented singer and then you don't have to be homeless anymore
“Life is so much more complicated than you think baby.”
turns into a bit of a misery porn piece after the halfway point, which i find a real pity because the first part was shaping up towards a good angle to tackle themes of poverty etc for family audiences. still, its heart is mostly in the right place and Brett Haley continues to be an afficionado for stories driven by music (though it’s mainly one song here that doesn’t get milked nearly enough haha). i think he just doesn’t work well with studio-overseen YA adaptations because this and All the Bright Places are both very formulaic and cheesy while Hearts Beat Loud was such a genuine, original banger.
Auli’i Cravalho is absolutely RADIANT though, her contagious happy-go-lucky smile belongs into every movie and she makes the protagonist the strong, heartfelt centerpiece she should be.

“Life is so much more complicated than you think baby”
A very mature, nuanced and beautiful movie led by the incredibly talented Auli’i Cravalho. It totally hits the nail on the head with the idea that we truly can never know what the person next to us is going through.
With that being said, it is National Suicide Prevention Week. And although this movie doesn’t necessarily touch on that topic specifically, it does show us how hard life can be for some. I feel like more and more people are experiencing tough times given the state of the world lately. So tell your people how much you care about them. Call your grandma. Kiss your friends. Reach out to those…
Brett Haley sure directs a lot of films. Auli’i Cravalho is good, but other than that this is no Hearts Beat Loud. Not bad but lacks the magic.
A film that thinks the only way to be an uplifting teen drama is to lean so much into misery and poverty porn that it's basically a self parody at times, all the while romanticizing the idea of lifting yourself out of homelessness through some unique hidden talent...Brett Haley what happened :(
GRADE: C
Definitely a little too melodramatic for my liking but covered a lot of issues that many movies shy away from, and they did it in a 90 minute timeframe. Auli’i Cravalho is fantastically talented and definitely shines in this movie.
Petition for Netflix to add two new categories to its film section:
Actually good teen films (where this film happily falls into)
&
God awful teen films
i was really apprehensive with watching this movie because i just felt like it was gonna be another forgettable teen movie with bad acting. this is actually what it dealt with:
- teens struggling with homelessness and poverty
- family problems (abuse / alcoholism)
- grieving losing a loved one
- a diverse friend group of all different ethnicities and also including a friend in a wheelchair and a friend on the spectrum
- actually refreshing good acting by teens and adults
is it still semi cheesy at some parts? absolutely. is it worth watching? yes !!
A solid YA drama. I have to go back and knock a half star off the previous film I watched because it'd be unfair to give both films the same score. This one is clearly had some actual depth to it. Yes it was a tad on the manipulative side. I held firm though until the sick pet. My Tessie was taken too soon 😿.
Not a must watch by any means and at times heavy 🧀, but I enjoyed it.
Is this melodramatic teen trash? Perhaps
Does trash day have to happen once a week? Absolutely
Also starring Carol Burnett! About a out of luck talented teenager who finds true gifts in her friends
Oh this movie was so sad.
I wasn't expecting that.
For many reasons, i empathize with Amber.
So, for me, this was difficult to match.
But it was a good movie. Sweet and precious.
