AlphaGo chronicles the team as it prepares to test the limits of its rapidly-evolving AI technology. I've never quite understood the strategy and subtleties of the ancient board game GO. But I do know a bit about AI (artificial intelligence.) Much the way that IBM developed Deep Blue to beat the world chess champion, Google subsidiary Deep Mind programmed a computer named AlphaGo to attempt to beat the world's greatest Go player, a Korean named Lee Sedol. None of the programmers were expert Go players. Rather, as explained in the film, the program was designed as a neural network which allowed the computer to teach itself how to play intuitively and dynamically improve its odds of winning. However, nobody expected the computer to actually prevail this early in the program's development.

Is youtube's algorithm finally recommending good videos?? What an interesting documentary about AI vs Human battling it out in Go. This documentary is inspiring, humbling, and terrifying all at the same time.
We live in such an interesting time in human existence. We're in this odd part of history where the future holds limitless possibilities and when we look back we will be so surprised with how little actually knew we would accomplish. AI has always and will always be interesting to me, but, intertwining AI with such an intimidating and complicated game like Go makes this doc all the more engrossing. I definitely recommend this!

A fascinating documentary about the unequal competition between man and machine, which opens up a variety of perspectives for the viewer. If you start with the research team, which has developed the AI, then at the latest toward the end of this turns into an irrepressible sympathy with the human challenger. The featured documentation shows us how AI can and will change our thinking and our lives.

AlphaGo is for me the definition of a safe documentary. It asks nothing of difficulty from the viewer except to give the subject matter a chance and lazily walk through the content like a museum exhibit. This is not a bad thing per-say, but it does leave me with a wish that this documentary could have been more original and had more time connecting with the people involved. We get to learn so much about the process and just not enough of the people involved.
It certainly had me more interested in Go as a game and will be exploring it more since after the viewing. I am prepared to lose my Go games.

the rush of emotions and reactions from the characters on both sides through the 5 game series is pinnacle storytelling
the shot composition is rather blasé
and it feels like a long Google ad at times
but the story makes up for the filmic lack of creativity
would def watch again
