Brave of this movie to depict all scientists as vain goobers who do exactly what they want at all times under the guise of scientific discovery. Jessup is basically the biggest bastard on earth, just treating the people around him like shit and never once looking inward so that he can instead do so much ayahuasca that he kills a Komodo dragon. Bob Balaban, the king, chuckles condescendingly at Jessup’s little experiments and then goes along with them with no actual resistance. Exhilarating trip between relationship drama, (body) horror and thriller with metaphysical scifi elements, which is, apart from the actual story, especially convincing on a visual level.
The effects are remarkable. The bizarre visions give you the feeling that you have just taken a banned substance with severe side effects.
The ending is a bit choppy, but it probably confirms my view of the love drama because the message is clear to me.
Loving each other may not be the only thing that matters, but its definitely the most important thing. Because without love, only one thing in life really makes sense.. dying.
Before daddy Cronenberg unleashed his iconic The Fly crazy uncle Russell took us to the depths of humanity in an unconventional and controversial film that makes us realize why he's one of the most underrated visionaries in cinema.
The truth is that by looking at the poster and perhaps with some of the special effects (which haven't aged that well, though still have their charm), one could easily believe this was a 90s sci-fi movie. There is something almost transcendental about the subject (no pun intended). Altered States can best be described as Ken Russell's own 2001; his film is an odyssey that takes the main character, Eddie, back to the origins of humanity. It also contains a lot of trippy lightshows.
