  As a soldier, one of the first things at which I excelled, according to the infallible eye of my drill sergeants, was marching and marching movements. As a white guy and someone whose idea of nightmare is dancing in public, I’m a proud member of Rhythmless Nation, but I can twist & turn on command at perfect stiff right angles in combat boots with the best of them, apparently.   American Sniper seems to be a mystery both for its creator and its subject, and that's OK. Clint Eastwood's deeply troubling depiction of a troubling figure manipulates its own character portrait into a mythical image, a tale of uncertain masculinity reinforced by the call of duty and hidden urges of violence.   I struggle to find the controversy in this unremarkable, shallow war film filled with missed opportunities.

  American Sniper (its title perhaps the most propagandist thing about it) gives us a dramatised version of real people and events. No different from the vast majority of war films. It shows us a war from an American perspective, centred around the experiences of Chris Kyle.

  It is filled with obnoxious stereo types from both sides, offering no surprises. It plays out like a generic story, simply recounting without subtlety and exploring nothing.

  Its worst crime is that it is a poor film.

  "Aim small, miss small." said Chris.

  And he squeezed the trigger. The scene switched to fucking bullet time. Everyone was on the edge of their seats, holding in their breath. Will it actually be a hit? Surely, it's not possible! We followed the bullet. --- It traveled straight for the the evil, evil terrorist and pierced right through his miserable skull! The sniper shoots and he scores! 2100 yards! It's fucking crazy! Never had this happen before in the history of murder! What a shot! He is indeed the legend! An american hero!!

  The creation of the American psyche: one of the most important films of the decade. When we see Chris Kyle's real memorial at the end, it isn't a memorial for Kyle but a memorial for America. Raindrops fall like tears over an American flag. Goodbye to morals.

  This is the closest thing I think Eastwood has done that fits as perhaps a companion piece to Unforgiven: Cooper's trajectory as Kyle is that where to be an American, hardness is burned into you at childhood to turn you into a killing machine as an adult, before consuming you whole, dehumanizing you, turning you into a monster and making you wish you almost deserve to die.

  American Sniper contains the best performance I've ever seen by a rubber baby. Rubber Baby is so good, it plays a boy, a girl, and an Iraqi infant over the course of the film while maintaining it's inanimate appearance. It's astonishing to watch.
