In 1840s England, palaeontologist Mary Anning and a young woman sent by her husband to convalesce by the sea develop an intense relationship. Despite the chasm between their social spheres and personalities, Mary and Charlotte discover they can each offer what the other has been searching for: the realisation that they are not alone. It is the beginning of a passionate and all-consuming love affair that will defy all social bounds and alter the course of both lives irrevocably.

i’ve spent many hours of my life seeking out stories like this. not all of them are (or have to be) love stories, but even when love isn’t the main focus there’s still one element that every good film needs: chemistry. and ammonite has none. that isn’t the only thing lacking here, but it’s the most glaring reason why this never clicked for me. i sometimes give the benefit of the doubt to some of the worst films i’ve seen because they made me feel something, but here there is nothing to feel. i felt neither happy or sad, no desire to see the characters together or apart. i have no idea what went wrong here or where it started going wrong, all i know is that it doesn’t work for me
the idea of francis lee having a tantrum when the portrait of a lady on fire trailer drops midway through shooting this was honestly the only thing that kept me going

how the heck do you mess up a movie with both KATE WINSLET and SAOIRSE RONAN playing LOVERS?!?
Ammonite was boring, long, and uninspiring. I guess rocks are cool but the score was extremely underutilized. Too much silence for an already tedious film. The disappointment is real.
I know it’s a movie about geology but it wouldn’t hurt to add a bit of chemistry!!!!1!
