The biggest mystery in David O. Russell’s Amsterdam — far bigger than the one surrounding the dead body at the film’s center — is how did a movie with so many stellar elements turn out so mediocre? This movie has an absurd number of A-list stars, a.promising premise, a timely message, maybe our greatest living cinematographer, and a director who has made some excellent movies in the past. And yet even with all those outstanding components, something feels off about the end result. Sometimes you can get all the ingredients in the recipe right and still bake a bland cake. That’s Amsterdam: Looks fantastic, totally devoid of flavor.

this would have been way better if it was directed by Wes Anderson... my goodness.
I think my rating is generous considering how boring and generic this film felt. Christian Bale and Margot Robbie try their hardest to keep this alive but the film fails at almost everything else. I will admit I was intrigued throughout the first 40 minutes of the film as it set up an interesting premise but it literally goes nowhere and just feels like a mess of events. The story feels so convoluted and it takes too much time to establish the kind of story it wants to tell without a cohesive tone. Performances and score (by Daniel Pemberton which was actually pretty solid) aside, this was a messy, tedious, and unmemorable film that feels like it's trying too hard to be something it's not. Easily a skip.
david o'russell flexes how many people will still work with him in hollywood despite how much of a detestable cunt he is
i would say this is a new low for david o. russell but uhh he did sexually assault his niece sooooooo
**sigh**
Bland and shallow. Characters I couldn’t care less about and Robert DeNiro phoning it in for a paycheck. What an absolute waste of a stellar cast.
Christian Bale was so good he made everyone around him look like first year performing arts students.
has the distinction of being the worst-edited mainstream release i have ever seen in my life. every line has a buffer of about 2 full seconds before the next person starts talking. conversations will just be a shot of a person saying a whole line, then a cut to the other person who says their whole line. no cross-talk or dialogue pulled over to the next image. just "here's the take of john david washington. now put in the take of margot robbie." etc etc for over two goddamn hours. jaw-dropping that a film this clumsily constructed released to thousands of theaters in this form. i mean jesus. and even with another pass this is still a stupid, unfunny, maudlin movie about anti-bigotry and togetherness made by a child molester. david o. russell go to hell!
Just stand in front of your mirror and say Amsterdam over and over again for 2 hours and you’ll get the same effect
