A young mouse named Fievel and his family decide to migrate to America, a "land without cats," at the turn of the 20th century. But somehow, Fievel ends up in the New World alone and must fend off not only the felines he never thought he'd have to deal with again but also the loneliness of being away from home.

It was awesome to get my three boys to join me to watch An American Tail without too much of a struggle this year, since they are becoming more picky and rebellious each day. As a cartoon musical, it's decent; as a story of cat/mouse hegemony and subjugation, it's fascinating. But as a period piece? Jaw-dropping. An American Tail's New York City c. 1885 is bustling, feculent, corrupt, and candlelit, with poor little Fievel tossed this way and that around the Lower East Side. Sewers, piers, shoeboxes... everywhere's strewn with trash and fraught with danger for an immigrant mouse in an oversized cap. I was also impressed by the movie's literary points of reference: Julius Caesar, The Pirates of Penzance, The Brothers Karamazov. This movie's narrative curvature may be familiar, but its writing is agreeably sophisticated and its milieu dense with detail.
The mice should have just stayed in Russia and waited for the Communist Revolution.
This marks the 3rd year that I have watched An American Tail with my kids to celebrate the July 4th.
This was one of my favorite movies growing up, and I love it even more now with its fantastic animation, score and songs, emotional story, and historical context.

Cute and harmless but I’m not gonna lie, I kinda prefer The Great Mouse Detective as the “great mouse adventure movie of 1986.” I was very bored and I only wanted Fieval to find his family out of principle rather than actually rooting for him and his family to be reunited. Don Bluth is very clearly a talented animator and I don’t think this is anywhere near his worst work. But I’d rather rewatch Secret of NIMH since that’s a better movie. Also there were clearly cats in America so that was a fucking lie.
