We really don't have actors like Alastair Sim anymore. Everything is about sharp jaws and abdomens that look like a pan of rolls.
Back in the 50s you could have a leading man that looked like a necromancer brought a bowl of pudding to life.
They need to do another adaptation of this with Tom Holland, Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya and Anya Taylor Joy

I studied this alongside, Macbeth & A Christmas Carol when I was at school and I always liked An Inspector Calls the best out of the three.
I’ve seen this before and the 2015 adaptation and I really enjoyed it.
I just think the story is brilliant and it has so many meaning in it and I love the mystery. I thought the flashbacks to help explain the story were a little boring. It would of been good if they followed the play and kept it all at the dinner table.

Being a cultural peon, I was completely unfamiliar with anything but the title of the source JB Priestley play that this 1954 film version was based on, but I think that worked out rather well as I really had no idea what to expect and went into this one completely blind.
Directed by Guy Hamilton, who would go on to make a much bigger name for himself at the helm of four James Bond films and, almost as importantly, Remo: Unarmed And Dangerous, this is, from what I can gather, a very faithful version of the source play aside from changing the name of said inspector from Goole to Poole. A mystery (somewhat leaning towards noir) embracing from romance to tragedy and drama that happens to be a quite unknown film of its period time. I would recommend this to anyone invested in classic films, especially if you enjoy Hitchcock as Hamilton incorporates some Hitchcockian themes and motifs throughout from climatic plot twists, the figure of the domineering mother, switching sides among characters (mainly generating distrust around them), staircases as an element of suspense, etc.
Also worth of notice for my recommendation is the performances of the cast like Alastair Sim who prior starred in other films such as Scrooge (1951) or Green for Danger (1946). Hamilton and Desmond Davis (working as screenwriter), create a sharp and sufficiently fluid adaptation…

Me whenever Alastair Sim was on screen: I don’t know who this gentleman is, but he is literally just vibing.
Most famous for directing Goldfinger and three lesser lights of the 007 canon, Hamilton does pretty nice job here, especially when the action stays within the Birlings home. In the Priestly play, we never meet Eva Smith/Daisy Renton, but here, Hamilton stages several flashbacks where we see how each member of the Birling family, and daughter Sheila's fiancé all had connections to a young woman who has just committed suicide. Although Jane Wenham, who plays Eva/Daisy is quite good in the role, maybe it might have been more compelling if we never met the actual woman. I remember reading J. B. Priestley's play in high school English class and rather enjoying it, so revisiting it in movie form was quite a joy, especially with the inscrutably elegant Alastair Sim in the central role.
This is one of future Bond director Guy Hamilton's early films and it's rather primitive, not really escaping the stage origins, though by hinting at the supernatural with ominous music cues and suggestive editing, it does come off like an intriguing extended episode of the Twilight Zone.
