Two sisters look back on their life together.
Winner of the best animated short at the 1986 Academy awards, Anna & Bella is a tale of two sisters looking back at their lives together. Sat around a table they pour over a family photo album with each of the photos triggering a flashback to the events surrounding the photo. First these sequences capture their carefree lives as children but the stories become darker and more bittersweet as the short progresses.
It’s a pretty simple concept with the photographic framing device being a little too familiar. However, there is an energy to each of these memories that make the film worth watching, particularly during the more surreal later flashbacks that use the animated medium to full effect. With a limited colour palette and simple lines there is an attractive simplicity to the animation and art direction whilst the characters are particularly expressive.
What a lovely and heartbreaking short film. This won the Oscar for Best Animated Short. It's a simple stories of two reflecting on their lives, and the high and low tragic points that is part of their history. A tough watch near the end, but oh so poignant.
Combining minimal color, a very Disney-looking brush style, and some flashes of inspired abstract animation, Anna & Bella is a lovely look at nostalgia and sisterhood. Or at least, I believe that was director Børge Ring's intention; what he delivered instead is a short that touches on those ideas in its first half and then takes a sharp left turn into tragedy and rivalry. While the plot point that fuels the tragedy is a bit of an eyeroll for me (they fight over a man), the shift in tone is jarring and unsettling in a surprisingly effective way. In the end, it's slight and not terribly profound, but it's an enjoyable piece of work.
It was going well until the last 2 minutes, its ending is rather abrupt and rushed.
A tale of two sisters looking back on their lives and reminiscing in the memories of old photographs. Nostalgia is usually a important theme that speaks to me on a personal level whenever I see it included on film but here I'm not so sure they captured the essence of it correctly.
Anna & Bella features a wide array of different styles and usage of animation in its short runtime. Going from a particular color scheme, to rough sketch art to a more detailed form. As the sisters drink wine and laugh over the photos that play out in flashbacks, we as the audience are suppose to become in tune with their relationship and its building blocks. However I'm not sure…
A story of familial recollection as a pair of sisters revisit their shared past through a series of photographs. It's lovely and the animation style is unique and precise in it's choices (for both lines and color) but the tonal shifts here are just too forced to really reckon with as a whole. The ending does try to wrap things up, but the journey feels uneven.
An animated melody of age and Experience.
Two sisters go through Old photos and albums ranging from childhood to teenage to heart break, this short film and academy award winner. I thoroughly loved this film because of its sketchy details, painted animation and greenish DI, a memorable short for sure.
Wants to be cute and sentimental very desperately, and at times even succeeds.
Part of my effort to watch at least one short film per day. Here is the list I am currently working through, with a random number generator determining the film each day. I will take recommendations for everything that's 40 minutes max.
I suppose even the worst of memories can be looked back with a laugh after a while.
