    Annihilation [1/4]
    - This is so awful in so many ways.

The characters and dialogue feel like pre-first draft ramblings of exposition and inhuman emotional beats. Like, this feels like it wasn't made by people. The concept is interesting, and there are some cool scenes and moments (the beast scene thing), but overall the execution is super dumb, it feels like a deeply worse rip-off of Arrival, the characters are flat and nothing (same with performances), the structure is dull,…

I'm not sure if it's been really well-edited since the work print I saw last March or if I was just in the right mood this time (probs both) but I really connected with it this time. Its abstract qualities will definitely be alienating to some audiences, especially those who go in expecting a straightforward sci-fi/alien/alt-dimension story -- it certainly doesn't go out of its way to make sure you understand it on a literal level -- but the character…

    1st 3/4ths:
    Mediocre fan-fiction/ short film

    Last 4th:
    Decent fever-dream fan-fiction/short film

This film didn't sit too well with me, if you couldn't tell.

First off, I'm starting to pick up clear patterns in Garland's work.
Like how at one point in the first 15 minutes, he'll have a character spew out a bunch of super dense science jargon, just to make sure you know that you're watching a science-fiction film if you didn't already.
    And, how although I can't…

Uhh WOW... I don’t even know where to start with this one...

This movie redefines the sci-fi genre and elevates it to a more complex and interesting form. This is one of the most visually stunning movies I’ve ever seen in my entire life, it exceeds the visuals of any of the movies currently nominated for the Oscar for Visual Effects. It is extremely off putting and disturbing and creepy and even scary at times but in the most amazing,…

I had a mad case of the poops before the movie, and while I watched this I immediately thought my insides were moving like the other characters' were, which gave me a little fright.

Also no CGI boss battle at the end, 0/10.

I was dealing with some weird general anxiety today and this did NOT help. It's deeply unsettling. Garland parcels out information beautifully, showing us an image and then subverting it, keeping us confused and disoriented. It's a film I'm eager to see again, and one clearly influenced by Stalker and Solaris.

    I'm unsettled. Deeply.

The excellent set pieces (The Lighthouse! The bear! 😱) outweigh the poor, tacked-on attempts at characterization (The river trip, the affair). I'd watch this more than once, which is a rare thing for me to say about a Natalie Portman movie.
