Experiencing Mark Proksch's prolonged duck impression was the most satisfying cinematic moment in all my film-watching years.
Frightfest 2016 Film # 3
Ok, so after the first two films (I missed the 3 films on opening night) it was pretty safe to say that this years frightfest was off to a bang average start, good job things were about to take an up swing in the awesome direction. Another Evil was my first journey into the discovery screens this weekend and I made the decision to see the film based solely on the cool ass poster, luckily it turned out to be a good choice.
A real original feeling story that gets the sometimes awkward balance between horror and comedy just right. Steve Zissis stars as Dan, an unassuming family man and abstract artist, while spending time…
Bizarre, original and hilarious. If you like Creep or The Cable Guy, you'll enjoy this!
I REALLY loved the first half of this movie, it felt really sturdy and I thought I knew where it was going.
Then it becomes something else, something darker and it loses all momentum.
Bummer.
An initial lukewarm reception made me skip this one back when it came out, which I now regret. It's such a unique take on the basic haunted house/exorcism story, wasting no time on the disbelief arc or any other such tropes. The script is packed with laughs, particularly thanks to the self serious absurdity of Mark Proksch, whose self described "ghost assassin" is a complex portrait of a man who both knows too much and too little to be doing what he's doing. Steve Zissis plays an excellent straight man to the supernatural antics, garnering more than a few chuckles himself. While low budget, the film uses great sound design and sparing use of it's special effects to craft supremely effective scares and memorable visions at key moments, then leaning on sheer tension to carry most of it's unpredictable climax. An absolute delight of a film, funny, frightening, and upsetting in equal measure.
An interestingly funny and dark film about an out of touch ghost hunter. If it wasn't for the amazing comedic talent of Mark Proksch, this might not have done much for me. He kept it funny and intriguing enough for me to stay with what was otherwise a bit lackluster. There are a few great moments throughout and I was definitely a fan of the ending, but the movie could've been better overall. A good idea that just didn't work as well as it should have in my opinion.
Another Evil is another of those fun, quirky indie horror comedies that focuses more on the characters than the actual horror. The horror this time being a ghost in a haunted house. Only as the story develops we learn that the ghost isn't actually the only damned soul haunting the house. After all it doesn't have to be a supernatural being to be a monster.
First half of the film is the funniest as it introduces the small cast of quirky characters. Then the second half of the film takes a slightly darker, more serious tone that most of us can actually relate to.
Absolutely fantastic film that you will most likely see on my top horror films of 2017. This easily has some of the most likeable and well written characters in any film I've watched so far. This is a horror comedy but it's definitely in the mumblecore style which is much more understated and focuses on the awkward humour.
Dan played by Steve Zissis is vacationing with his family in their cottage when they suddenly discover it's haunted. In an effort to rid himself of the ghosts he hires a ghost hunter named Os who comes highly recommended. At first Dan is going along with things but as Os' rituals become more and more bizarre things become more uncomfortable between them.…

The temptation to just make this review a reference to On Cinema is too great and I'm sure I will cave in at some point.
But it would be doing Carson Mell's neat little horror-comedy a disservice if I didn't talk about it at least a little bit because it's rather good. Obviously being an On Cinema-head, the presence of Mark Proksch was the main attraction for me. That he produces such a fine performance here isn't a surprise. On Cinema would never have worked if the central performances weren't of the absolute highest calibre.
So that's a given. I also was happy to give Another Evil a pass…
this movie is so odd and good, I will revisit it at least 10-15 more times before I die
Okay, are you sure you're not just imagining this? I mean, we did a shit-ton of acid back in the day.

An unwanted guest comedy disguised as a haunted house movie. If you like cringe-humor, you’ll be right at home, if not this might not be your thing at all.
The very lonely and socially inept exorcist Os Bijourn is played by Mark Proksch who makes a living off of cringe inducing and awkward humor. I mostly know him from shows like The Office and What We Do in the Shadows. If you liked him in either of those shows, you’ll dig what’s going on here.
Side note: I avoided watching What We Do in the Shadows for the…
This is a great little twist on the conventional haunted house flick. The two leads worked great together. They were capable actors who hit the funny bits and the serious ones too. I was laughing at parts and cringing at others. The buildup is very satisfying and the twist was fantastic. Great movie.
