  Il y a des choses là-dedans qui m'ont assez déplu, les chœurs par exemple, pas un mauvais concept en soi, mais l'exécution fait mal, et les noms grecs, à part Antigone, c'est lourd, et par moments les dialogues c'est plus ridicule qu'autre chose (surtout dans les moments plus dramatiques, vers la fin), etc. Mais c'est pas bien grave, parce qu'il y a Nahéma Ricci, une vraie découverte, qui porte tout le film, avec ses allures de Falconetti chez Dreyer, et il y a une sensibilité chez Deraspe qu'on aimerait voir plus souvent par ici. Il me semble que le didactisme n'est qu'apparent, il résulte de cette prémisse "d'adaptation moderne d'une tragédie grecque", une idée assez audacieuse dans le contexte, comme un prétexte nécessaire pour mieux exposer le drame humain derrière (la tension entre la famille et la citoyenneté est vraiment bien rendue). Je sais pas, c'est assez difficile à saisir, mais ça marche bien.

  Watched this on a whim since Tiff was offering some films for free as part of our National Canadian film day.

  I really liked the choice to take a classic narrative and incorporate it into a modern context. The choice of the immigrant experience in Canada was a great as well. Specifically since we pride ourselves on our diversity yet have many of the same systematic inequities that plague the states.

  Outside of that the film looks amazing and the lead performance from Nahéma Ricci was great. There were also a few scenes here and the that really got me emotional.

  I am not familiar with the Socrates play outside of it being the third part of the Oedipus so I cannot say anything about it as an adaptation.

  But I can say it's really good. Basically Antigone is an immigrant with a couple of brothers that are in a gang, after one is shot by police while unarmed the other attacks a cop and is arrested for attacking the officer.

  So Antigone stages a failed attempt at a jailbreak knowing full well that as a minor they will take it easy on her, and things get complicated.

  I just read this essay by Vladimir Nabokov for an online class I'm taking about what makes a good reader. He challenged the popular notion that connecting to and identifying with characters in a novel is a good thing. Instead he says a reader should use their imagination to enter and try to understand a separate world, unrelated to your own that the author created.

  I don't know if I 100 percent agree with that, and I know movies are different than books, but it made me think about how I have a tendency to project myself and my own bullshit onto films and their characters too.

  Powerful and impressive. Talented young filmmaker Sophie Deraspe adaptation of Sophocles' classic Greek tragedy "Antigone", updated to contemporary Quebec, touching on themes of emigration and the differential application of the law for citizens and immigrants in contemporary Quebec. The best film I've seen so far in 2021.

  Here, Antigone is a refugee from Northern Algeria, living with her grandmother (her parents were murdered by the state) and her 3 siblings - Eteolce, Polynice and Ismene.   Ça fait quatre jours et je ne sais toujours pas trop quoi écrire là dessus... Il y a certaines formes de maniérismes qui agacent, des flashbacks de trop, mais Antigone renferme quand même une énergie et une sensibilité qui font plaisir à voir dans le cinéma québécois.
  J'ai l'impression de ne pas vraiment être le public cible de ce film; qu'il s'addresse davantage à un public d'ados ouverts au cinéma "d'auteurs" ou qu'il appartient à ce que les librairies anglos apellent le genre "young adults"... Mais, hey, y'a pas de scène de ralentit de white male qui pleure dans sa douche. Profitez en, allez le voir, faites vous votre propre opinion sur le film.

  Les adaptations modernes d'œuvres classiques me fascinent. Je trouve le concept vraiment cool, j'aime que ça donne une nouvelle vie aux œuvres, cette idée qu'on puisse toujours s'y retrouver peu importe la distance entre nous et la source – c'est une forme de traduction, alors ça s'enligne avec mes intérêts académiques. Et quand ça fonctionne, quand les liens entre le présent et le temps de l'œuvre-source sont bien tissés, ça donne des films très riches. Et de ce point de vue, j'ai trouvé qu'Antigone était bien réussi. Ça aide que Nahéma Ricci soit excellente. Je l'ai trouvée si magnétique, si bouleversante.
