  Scott Cooper’s cold, muddy & dark ANTLERS delivers a creepy atmosphere, terrifying creature design & gory makeup effects. But it struggles to effectively explore & connect its many themes of abuse, poverty & wendigo mythology. Technically well crafted but frustrating narratively.

  While Antlers is a recommend, I felt like director Scott Cooper didn’t fully develop the themes of abuse, neglect, poverty and environmental destruction he introduced. Plot was very predictable after the (amazing) first act. The film often lacked nuance despite a well-crafted atmosphere and haunting performances. 

  Practical effects and CGI/creature design were SICK though, you can feel prod. Guillermo del Toro’s influence. And Keri Russell got the final girl role she rightly deserves.

  The grim atmosphere and the hideous creature effects are executed well enough that one wishes the actual material could measure up. Russell and Plemons are given the thankless task of elevating a prosaic script, its trajectory so familiar and its themes so scattershot that little sticks. Five-for-five now, Scott Cooper is the reigning king of “movies you watch once.”

  scott cooper strikes again. another derivative but otherwise nice-looking genre exercise that made by anyone else might be ok just absolutely annihilated by his shallow style posturing and capital-T themes. pretty cool monster i guess.

  Not bad…but not great either…just average!! It has some great points, the scenery is gorgeous and even though it looks so bleak and gloomy I still found it so beautiful to look at, the cinematography and overall aesthetic was excellent, great atmosphere and mood. The acting is pretty good, the young child actor is exceptionally good, and Keri Russell and Jesse Plemons both do decent work, however, the script doesn’t allow then to do too much.

  It has a bit of a downfall in the fact that there’s so many themes being juggled, and none really given focus so it sometimes feels like a few different movies. None of the themes come together to make a big point in regards…
