A giant film in cinematic history. This film might not have been the first historical drama, but its critical success cemented the genre as a big-budget money maker on the big screen, which documentaries had been seemingly trying to do since the inception of the film industry. There's really no telling how many more people have seen Niel Armstrong land on the moon in the introduction of this film than have actually pulled the events up on you-tube or elsewhere. Aside from the historic consideration of this film, the acting is fabulous and the story is brilliant, establishing a clear emotional connection to the main players before they even put on their flight-suits. My favorite part of this inspiring true story of survival and the best of the human spirit is that Jack Swigert gave Fred Haise the clap by sharing a urine catheter with him. Funny that NASA scratched Ken Mattingly for potentially being exposed to measles but let Swigert onto a spaceship fully burning.
I cannot stop thinking about the bit where tom hanks peed into space, like, I have so many questions. where does the pee go? does is disappear? does it freeze? does it just float around? where does it end up? does is come back to earth? if so, what happens then? can it get through the atmosphere? is it still a liquid? what if when it rains we're all being showered in tom hanks' piss?

Ron Howard has made a name for himself as a journeyman director. As a chameleon, he’s capable of tackling different genres, but by the end, as a chameleon, he doesn’t leave much of a footprint. If I had to actually come with a distinction in each and every of his movie is that his movies always feel “grounded” and in most cases, “Oscar-bait”.
In the case of this reenactment of the Apollo 13 troubled attempt to land in the moon, the greatness of it all lies heavily on its subject matter, the writing and in some very subtle ways, its performances. Tom Hanks reunites with his Splash director Ron Howard for an authentic trip to the moon. It’s no secret how passionate Tom is about the Apollo program, and I’m sure he loved having the chance to make this realistic depiction of this fateful mission.
I forgot how drawn out this movie actually is, but I really appreciated that it wasn’t dumbed down or over-dramatized in the hopes of appealing to a larger audience. Instead, what you get is a science based movie that sticks pretty close to the facts and thanks to a fantastic cast is still able to deliver a compelling story.
