Apostles of Cinema follows Frank, DJ Black, and Rehema — three devoted film workers in Tanzania — as they reintroduce a classic piece of the country’s film history to their audiences of working class cinephiles. We join them, alongside Maangamizi: The Ancient One (2001), on a journey through the labyrinth of informal libraries, studios, and cinemas that exist to keep film and film culture alive. A testament to the profound cultural value of film when made truly accessible.

my favourite from the miff documentary shorts selection — such a joy, i have got to watch a DJ black dub asap
Film preservation taken to the streets. I want to know more and more about the underground culture of overdubbing the world’s favourite (and not so favourite) films.
Often hilarious, but also enlightening, a look at the “pirates” of films in Tanzania. Back street market stalls with a plethora of downloaded and burned DVD’s of classic films from all over the planet, but there’s a twist!!! DJ Black dubs the films in Swahili, not simply repeating the dialogue but interpreting & adding his own spin to the films. He claims to have done over 50,000 (please feel free to correct me if he said 5,000 - it’s still a LOT).
We visit DJ Black’s studios (where power blackouts are a common occurrence), there we find the director of ‘Maangamizi: The Ancient One’, a Tanzanian classic, where he explains that DJ Black’s work helps in getting his film to the…
Smiled the whole way through, what a lovely celebration of peoples love for film and the community around it. So wonderful to see cinema in its back street Robin Hood form.

Such a fun doco short! I loved the energy. The typography was doing a little too much but it grew on me by the end. Pangram Pangram Migra?
a hilarious and heartwarming portrait of tanzanian cinema culture. this film shows how the love of movies has grown through ‘DJs’ that remix famous movies with tanzanian street language dubbing, to make movies accessible. the comedy shines when you see how liberal and creative some the ‘DJs’ are in their job dubbing the dialogue.
