Unbelievably charming. An instant coming of age classic as far as I’m concerned. Justice for Norman Fisher. Kathy Bates and Rachel McAdams are so damn good in this!! Embarrassed to admit I never read this book and therefore didn’t realize how much of this book was about a child discovering religion. Got excited thinking “alright, Kelly Fremon Craig is gonna tell us which religion is the right one.”
Finally a movie has captured that stomach dropping, palms sweating moment when you’re 11 and realize a guy in your grade has….

so i guess preteen girlhood is a universal experience that hasn’t changed at all since the 70s huh

Don't skip out on this one. Kelly Fremon Craig, of The Edge of Seventeen, is back with another banger. Nuanced and full of life. This film explores preteen anxieties and awkwardness very well, with a healthy dose of funny scenarios and a consistent layer of emotional baggage. There's a lot about Margaret's narrative that resonates. Parents trying their best to rise above their own childhood experiences. Kids falling into the same traps and routines with equal amounts of confusion and self-awareness. Religion plays a big part too, of course. Rachel McAdams and Benny Safdie provide effortless supporting performances, and the entire film is like that. Flows nice and easy. Really understated and lovely.
I’m sorry Margaret, not even God can stop New Jersey from being horrible.
What an incredible cast. Rachel McAdams, Benny Safdie, Kathy Bates; Abby Ryder Fortson stole both of the first two Ant-Man movies, and she did not disappoint as Margaret. But I think my favorite performance in the whole movie might have been Elle Graham as Nancy Wheeler, the pushy girl on the block who goads the others 6th graders into premature maturity. And she’s wonderful doing that material, but then she sideswipes you with that scene in the restaurant bathroom. Whew — powerful stuff.
I am dreading my daughters having to deal with all of this nonsense in a few years. But I take a small amount of…
charming & moving & best yet: a movie for tweens that is actually a movie for tweens (and everyone on either side of them). a killer Rachel McAdams and a serviceable Benny Safdie. girlhood sucks but this movie does not. my review for The Film Stage
Rachel McAdams going from the mean girl in high school to the sweet mom now and she STILL a baddie
