Don't you just hate it when a film sets up its story really well, only to devolve into random nonsense? What starts off as a rather compelling adventure, in the derring-doing spirit of Lara Croft and Indiana Jones, loses credibility along the way, seemingly making things up as it goes.
Boasting such an abundant wealth of history, mythology and attention-grabbing exposition, there's a lot of interesting directions that could have been taken here. Not least when set in a location as creepy as the infamous Paris catacombs. But alas, somewhere in the creative process, the screenwriters chose...poorly.
An entertaining piece of urban spelunking nonetheless though. Consistently above boredom. Ever below excellence.
Turns out the real philosopher's stone was the friends we made along the way.
I fucking love this movie. I saw it in the theater with a friend and we were the only ones there except for some dude sitting by himself down towards the front and the movie, along with his presence, just totally freaked us out. Great times!
Even on this umpteenth rewatch, it still induces quite a bit of anxiety. The further down they go, the creepier things get and the general depiction of Hell in this is one of my favorites ever put on film. I don’t seem to remember noticing before how attractive the actor playing Papillon is so that’s something new this time?
Also, I thoroughly enjoy any horror movie that critics trash and audiences enjoy and this was one of those movies.
